Eastbourne Dynamos had the long trip to Wittersham this weekend. The game was played out in windy conditions but on a lovely playing surface.
Eastbourne were the more dangerous side in the first half, helped by having the wind behind them. The Dynamos defence were looking solid but Eastbourne seemed to want to play the long ball over the top far too much and the wind just helped it through to the home keeper.
Dean Pugh had the early chances, but both his efforts went over the bar when trying to lob the keeper. Neil Taylor then had two chances to give the visitors the lead, but his first effort went over the bar from just outside the area, and his second hit the post before being cleared by the defender.
Taylor then set up Jeff Ferguson with a neat pass across the area, Ferguson's shot was on target but well saved by the keeper.
Martin Bell in the Eastbourne goal then prevented Wittersham from taking the lead with a smart save with lifted the ball over the bar of Dynamos gave away possession in their own half.
The Wittersham keeper saved well again when Ferguson's free kick flashed across goal before Christian Courtier diverted the ball goalwards towards Mark Likeman, but the keeper got to the ball first.
Confusion in the home teams defence lead to Dynamos taking the lead mid way through the half. Likeman took a long free kick which bounced over the Wittersham defence and fell to Taylor or was standing on the edge of the area, Taylor had all the time in the world to turn and place the ball in the bottom left hand corner while Wittersham were claiming for offside until they were reminded that you can't be offside from a goal kick.
Dynamos soon doubled their lead when Ferguson's corner was diverted into the net by Pugh who was unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box.
The second half saw Wittersham have more possession as the searched for a goal that would get them back into the game. Dynamos looked content to attack on the break but you always sensed that Eastbourne needed a third goal to secure all three points.
Pugh had a shot saved by the keeper after beating the defender, and Taylor shot was eventually cleared by the defender after beating the keeper to the ball outside the area.
The Eastbourne defence battled well and for a long while didn't look like being beaten, maybe the only criticism was Dynamos played too deep at times, inviting pressure on and never really holding onto possession in Wittersham's half.
Wittersham got back into the game when Dynamos never fully cleared the ball on the right and the Greens midfielder crossed the ball into the area, the Wittersham player got to the ball first as it moved away from goal and his overhead kick found its way into the net avoiding the three defenders and the keeper on the line.
The goal seemed to give Wittersham hope and with 7 minutes left, the found their equaliser after their player went down after a challenge from Simon Burke in the area and the Referee pointed to the spot. Martin Bell was unable to make it three penalty saves in as many games.
Dynamos could have won it right at the end as they won a free kick just inside Wittersham's half, the ball was crossed in at the back post and Likeman jumped with two defenders who knocked it past their own keeper and into the net, but the Referee said there was a foul on one of the defenders and disallowed the goal.
A point each then for the two teams fighting against relegation. Dynamos will be disappointed to have lost a two goal lead, and to miss the chance to put some distance between themselves and Wittersham who have a game in hand.
