Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos kicked off their league campaign with an away fixture against last seasons Division 4 runners up, Battle Rangers.

Dynamos manager Gary Taylor managed to field a reasonably strong side, with a few players still unavailable for selection. But the side that did take to the field looked well balanced and organised.

In the opening periods, Eastbourne kept the ball and passed well on a lovely surface that will probably be one of the best pitches of the season.

Last season, one of the teams main problems was keeping the ball upfront and taking their chances when they came, but within 6 minutes Dynamos had taken the lead when the Home side failed to clear the ball, and Christian Corder managed to control before shooting on the turn, finding the far side of the net.

Dynamos then had numerous half chances, but failed to make anything of them. Neil Taylor and Jamie Drummond, who was making his competitive debut, worked well upfront. Darren Vine and Corder where winning most things in the midfield and closing down well.

The Dynamos defence looked organised and played a high line up the pitch, which helped the team on a whole. Martin Bell was called into action, but it was mainly to clear up anything that got behind the defence.

Drummond then claimed his first competitive goal for the club with about 10 minutes to go before half time. He managed to pick up a pass on the left, behind the defence before placing it well into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

The rest of the half became a stop-start affair with players from both teams going down injured and requiring treatment.

The second half saw Rangers come out fighting and put Eastbourne under pressure. Dynamos managed to clear their lines and forced numerous counter attacks but failed to increase the score line.

Midway into the second half, Eastbourne managed to add to their tally when good work down the right lead to Vine having the ball just outside the area, he managed to turn his defender before putting the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

Dynamos then added another when Mark Likeman surged forward before playing a neat through ball to Dean Pugh on the left who managed to beat the offside trap near the halfway line and race clear before shooting high into the net, the keeper did managed to get a hand to the ball but failed to keep it out.

The home side did have chances to get on the score sheet but after rounding Bell in the Eastbourne goal, the Battle player hit the post from a tight angle, but Dynamos will claim they had men on the line covering their keeper.

Substitute Jose Rodrigues, who was making his competitive debut, then helped set up Dynamos fifth. Good work down the right was finished off by finding Taylor in the box who had time to pick his spot and claim his first goal of the season.

Eastbourne managed to finish off the game securing their first clean sheet and their biggest ever win. The main positive was that Dynamos managed to take their chances and beat a team that were very good opponents and probably didn't deserve to lose by the score line they did. The win was a far cry from their first game last year. Dynamos looked organised and well balanced throughout the game, with everyone looking better players with more confidence than they did last year. Lets hope this good form continues.
