Lloyd Taylor,
Eastbourne Dynamos win 2-3 on penalties.

Eastbourne Dynamos looked to continue their early season form into the League Cup this weekend when they faced the short trip to rivals The Red Lion.

Dynamos were still unable to field a full strength side, as a number of key players where still missing, either through injury or Holiday.

Dynamos suffered an early blow when captain Christian Courtier went off early with what looked like an ankle injury. While the midfield had to be patched up, Dynamos were still trying to settle into the game and The Red Lion were clearly more geared up for the game than Eastbourne were.

The home side started to enjoy far more possession of the ball and Dynamos were forced to defend for long periods. Neil Taylor and Jamie Drummond worked hard up front, but where never really supported when the ball did finally get to them.

But for all the Red Lion's possession, Dynamo's defence stood firm and they rarely tested keeper Martin Bell, who was left to pick up the lose balls that entered his area.

The visitors then took the lead against the run of play when Jose Rodrigues battled for possession of the ball before playing a neat through ball into the area which Lloyd Taylor slotted past the keeper into the far left hand corner for his first goal of the season.

Dynamos battled out the rest of the half and looked to regroup at half time. But the second half saw both sides get involved in childish bickering between officials and players, when Eastbourne needed to get their head on the game and start to play football.

Eastbourne then gave away a cheap free kick on the right, which was sent into the Dynamos area and never dealt with, and the Red Lion player managed to divert the ball past the keeper and into the net to draw the game square with about 20 minutes to go.

Martin Bell kept Eastbourne in the cup with two great saves. The first when he some how managed to palm the ball round the post when it looked like the Red Lion striker had headed it into the top right hand corner, although Bell's heroics meant a clash with the woodwork and left him needing treatment.

His second save came when Lion's striker picked up the ball from a corner and his shot was deflected. Bell, who was going the wrong way, managed to get down to the ball with lightning reactions to get a hand behind the ball and put it out for another corner.

Both teams could have snatched the game, while Simon Burke and Lloyd Taylor both had shots from distance go just over the bar.

The game went into extra time and the game was slowing down even more. Eastbourne were suffering with injuries, and had already used their only sub in the opening minutes, so numerous players had to be patched up on the sidelines before being sent back on again to make up the numbers. The heat was hard to deal with for both players.

The game went to the lottery of penalties, of which Dynamos keeper would emerged as the hero when he saved 2 penalties as Dynamos won 3-2, with Neil Taylor, Mark Likeman and Jamie Drummond scoring theirs.
