Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos played their last home game for a long time this weekend against Battle Rangers, a team Dynamos beat twice last season, helped by one suspect goal decision.

Stephen Fletcher was the only player unavailable from last week's team. Manager Steve Newson made a few minor changes to the team, with Lloyd Taylor coming into the squad.

Dynamos first half performance wasn't great, with Rangers probably enjoying more possession. Martin Bell was on hand to make a couple of good saves before Alex Speirs picked up Neil Taylor's pass before being taken out in the area, winning a penalty, which Neil Taylor converted.

Dynamos should have been two up when Jamie Drummond collected Lloyd Taylor's pass into the box and then fired past the keeper from a tight angle, but the referee disallowed it because of offside, even though Drummond looked very much onside.

Battle were level not long after when their winger crossed from the left corner, but it looped over Martin Bell in the Dynamos goal and dropped under the bar and into the net.

Both teams created a couple of half chances before Eastbourne took the lead again. An Eastbourne corner was half cleared, but Drummond fired the ball back into the mix, the ball cleared nearly everyone, but Lloyd Taylor was on hand at the back post to fire the ball into the roof of the net.

Eastbourne manager Steve Newson made it clear he was not happy with the performance so far, but the players didn't seem to take his words on board as they didn't play any better in the second half.

The visitors were soon level 10 minutes into the second half after Dynamos failed to clear the ball and Rangers capitalised on some slack defending before firing past Bell.

Battle enjoyed more possession in the second half, but neither team really created anywhere near the amount of chances they had in the first half.

In the end the game was decided on a very poor refereeing decision. The Battle forward raced round the Dynamos full-back, before losing the ball to Bell when he dived at his feet to fantastically claim the ball, the striker had to jump over the keeper to avoid running into him. But the referee decided to award a penalty even though there were no claims of a foul from the Rangers players. The referee refused to say why he had awarded a penalty and instead told the Eastbourne players to go away.

The Battle player dispatched the penalty away, sending Bell the wrong way. With 15 minutes on the clock, Dynamos failed to get back into the game. Dynamos continued to argue with some of the questionable refereeing decisions instead of concentrating on getting back into the game.

Time ran out for Eastbourne and they suffered their first defeat of the season. But in the end the penalty decision cost Eastbourne at least a point, who in fairness didn't play well enough to win the game. Battle will see it as payback for the goal Dynamos scored last season, which went through a hole in the side netting before ending up in the back of the net.
