Eastbourne Dynamos were knocked out of the Eastbourne Junior Cup at the first hurdle on Saturday by Winkney Snrs.
Manager Steve Newson made a few changes to the team that beat Fishermens last week, with goal hero Mark Goodwin unavailable, Stephen Fletcher came into the side as captain, Neil Taylor also returned to the side. Miles Chambis was included amongst the subs ready for his first Dynamos appearance.
There was a slight wind, which didn't seem strong enough to play a bearing on the game, but it did. Winkey used the wind to their advantage, while Dynamos seemed to struggle. Keeping the ball on the deck would have been a good idea, but Eastbourne failed. Winkey also looked hungry for the ball and were hassling Dynamos into mistakes.
Winkney had secured a lead after 10 minutes, when their striker managed to score from the edge of the area.
The home side kept up their pressure, looking to increase their lead, while Eastbourne failed to mount any serious pressure on goal.
Dynamos did manage to pull level, when Dean Pugh's left wing cross was diverted past the keeper by the Winkney defender for an own goal. The goal did seem to give the visitors confidence, but they struggle to cope with the wind and didn't help themselves by seeming to be second to every ball.
The hosts did take the lead again when their speedy striker managed to latch onto the ball over the top, keeper Martin Bell did make a challenge but didn't get enough of the ball to stop the striker going round, but did force him wide. Despite this, the forward managed to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle before the defense managed to get back into position.
The second half was a different story, with Eastbourne enjoying far more possession of the ball, but failed to really create any clear cut chances. Winkney were forced to attack on the break, and looked far more dangerous the Dynamos did in the first half. Some great challenges from Stephen Fletcher and a couple of great one on one saves by Martin Bell kept Dynamos in the game until the very end.
Dynamos failed to find the killer ball to open up the Winkney defense, the midfield competed for the ball better than the first half, and Alex Speirs came close to getting the equalizer, but his effort flew just wide of the top left corner.
Jamie Drummond also saw a good effort go wide following a shot on the turn, he also missed in the dying seconds when after turning the defender on the byline, could only fine the side netting with three Eastbourne players bearing down on goal.
Dynamos were brought back down to earth following last week's good performance. Next week sees Eastbourne return to league action, where Beulah Baptists visit the rec.
