Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos travelled to Mayfield where it only seems to rain when Dynamos visit.

Opening exchanges saw both teams trying to settle on the slippery surface, and the game proved to be more of a midfield battle.

Goalkeeper Martin Bell was only called into action to collect the loose balls and a couple of shots from distance, while the Dynamos defence, continuing from last week's good performance, kept Mayfield further up the pitch.

Dynamos were making good headway down either wing, following some good play by Dayle Courtier, set Dean Pugh through who squared from Jamie Drummond to side-foot into the net, only for the goal to then be disallowed for offside, much to disagreement of the Eastbourne players.

Eastbourne did manage to take the lead when Dean Pugh's run into the area was brought to a halt when the full-back challenge was nowhere near the ball and the Dynamos No. 11 found himself on the deck. Neil Taylor dispatched away the penalty neatly into the bottom right hand corner.

A few minutes later and Mayfield had their own claim for a penalty, although the player did seem to go down a little to easy without much control of the ball.

Dynamos were starting to look settled, and trying to play the passing football their prefer, with Lloyd Taylor playing well down the wings, and Drummond working hard up front with Neil Taylor who was always a threat. While the defence were doing their utmost in the conditions.

Both teams managed to muster a few half decent chances on goal, but a lot of them were from distance or straight at the keeper.

Dynamos had enjoyed the better of the half, although Mayfield were starting to get the better of things towards the end of the half, but they continued this into the second half until Dynamos settled and the game became a bit of a stalemate in the miserable weather.

Dynamos should have been awarded a goal after Neil Taylor was put through on goal, beating the offside trap, but the keeper saved his first attempt on goal, and was then forced out wide, but his delicate chip over the keeper was on target until the defender managed to get something on the ball, but its momentum along with Drummond tussling with the defender the ball must have bounced at least 2ft over the line, but the referee was nowhere near the action, and only looked to the Mayfield linesman for confirmation, who to be fair, is never going to award a goal like that against his own team.

Dynamos protests were in vain and could have got some players into trouble. A few challenges later and the referee was losing control of the game as tackles went flying in, and looked worse because of the surface condition, and he was making some odd decisions for both teams, which didn't help.

With 15 minutes to go, Mayfield got their equaliser as they managed to work the ball down the right wing, before squaring it for their striker to curl in the ball from just inside the area into the top right hand corner, giving Bell no chance.

Dynamos were starting to feel a little sorry for themselves, and manager Steve Newson made a couple of changes as the visitors began to apply some pressure on the Mayfield goal.

Mayfield had to resort to counter attacks, but Eastbourne now seemed to want the game more, if maybe a little to late. Eastbourne carved out a couple of chances, and could have won the game, with Neil Taylor, Drummond and Pugh going close, but maybe Richard Payne had the best chance when Simon Burke picked him out with a peach of a pass, but Payne lost his footing at the vital time, only to see his effort skim wide of the post.

Dynamos are looking a far more settle team of late, and are starting to regain some of that defensive solidity that they have become accustomed to.
