The second Eastbourne derby of the season saw Fishermen's visit Old Town Rec this weekend. Dynamos won the first encounter 5-1, and were looking to complete the double.
Dynamos enjoyed the better of the first 10-15 minutes of the game, looking to get in front as soon as possible. Some nice passing moves saw the home side have most of the pressure, but only a couple of half chances came from it.
But soon Fishermens got into the game and were soon looking very threatening in the air and from set pieces. Dynamos were looking like not having a game last week was affecting their fitness levels, as they were looking jaded.
Fishermens soon took the lead when a corner from the left was swung in and headed in at the back post by their big centre forward.
Dynamos responded by having a few attempts on goal, but the keeper was in inspired form as he made a couple of good saves to keep the home side out. The visitors did threaten to extend their lead, and went very close when defender, goalkeeper and striker collided, and with the ball lose, could only be stabbed just wide of the post by the Fishermens striker.
The visitor's keeper then made some more good saves from Dayle Courtier and Neil Taylor before about 4 minutes before half time, luck was on Dynamos side as they equalised. Dean Pugh floated in a corner, which only just managed to stay in, but it dipped just over the keeper and bounced over the line with everyone seeming to miss it and hard to say who actually had the final touch.
Half time came at a good time for the blues, as manager Steve Newson could sit them down and sort things out. Changes were made and a few harsh words seemed to make all the difference, as Dynamos looked a different side from the one that played in the first.
Dynamos enjoyed the lion share of possession in the second half, with keeper Martin Bell only called into action a few times. Dynamos were helped with Fishermens losing a couple of key players due to injury.
Dynamos went close with a couple of chances, and the keeper continued to make some good saves, but was eventually beaten when Neil Taylor was brought down in the area after some good play by the home side. He picked himself up to take the penalty, and put Dynamos in the lead.
Jamie Drummond went close to extending the Dynamos lead shortly afterwards, but his persistence paid off when he chased was looked like a lost cause to collect the ball, the Fishermens players stopped claiming the ball went out of play, but the referee never blew his whistle and there was no flag from the linesman. Drummond found Taylor who turned and curled in the ball past the onrushing keeper and two defenders, just inside the far post to give Eastbourne the extra cushion they needed.
The game was beginning to open up, and the game seemed to swing from end to end, but Fishermen never looked as threatening as they did in the first half, while Dynamos looked and felt like they could score on every attack.
Dynamos defence held strong on a couple of occasions, and that is probably were the consistency over the last couple of weeks has helped.
Drummond had a goal chalked off for offside after being teed up by Pugh. Dynamos had a couple of half chances to really put the icing on the cake, while Fishermens still had their Rory Delap style long throw into the area which could have made the last few minutes a bit uneasy for Dynamos.
In the end Dynamos will feel they probably deserved all three points, which lifts them up into second in the league. Next week is the rescheduled Cup game against White Knight.
