Match Report

Hurst were looking to complete a league double over Eastbourne Dynamos as they visited Old Town Rec. Dynamos welcomed back Steve Fletcher and Mark Goodwin, who were unavailable last week, plus Shaun Peters was making his first appearance of the season.

Dynamos looked organised and focused in the early few exchanges. They looked to use their pace down the left with Dean Pugh and Mark Goodwin, while Alex Speirs and Darren Vine linked up well down the right. Shaun Peters gave the home side some aerial dominance they have lacked as he won everything that came near him.

Eastbourne had a couple of chances, but nothing that really tested the keeper, while Hurst looked to attack with pace. Both teams were still getting used to a pitch that looked like it had been played on already that morning.

The home side opened the scoring when Goodwin managed to get behind the Hurst defends, and his shot across goal was only palmed out to Richard Payne who was in the right spot to tuck away his first goal for the club.

Eastbourne will feel that they deserved to be in the lead, and went looking for a second, but it was Hurst who had the ball in the back of the net. A good passing move through the middle of the park, and the wingers first touch pass opened split the Dynamos defence open, which the striker managed to fire into the far corner. But the goal was ruled out for offside.

Hurst did pull level when they were awarded a free kick outside the area towards the right wing. The cross was headed in at the back post where the Eastbourne marking should have been.

The visitors had seen a lot more of the ball since the disallowed goal, but the game was very evenly matched. Just before half time, Eastbourne were awarded a penalty after their best move of the match. The ball was worked well down the right, with Jamie Drummond, Goodwin, Speirs all involved, possibly even a few more. They passed their way into the Hurst area, before the referee decided that Speirs had been fouled as he was taking his shot inside the area.

Neil Taylor stepped up to take the penalty, his first attempt was nearly saved by the keeper, but the referee wanted it retaken for encroachment. Neil Taylor tucked away his second attempt, which was a better penalty than the first.

Eastbourne needed to work hard now and keep things tight so that they could get to half time with their lead intact. But Hurst forced a corner, and although the initial ball into the box was headed away by Peters, Dynamos failed to push up quick enough, and a few players kept the visitors onside when the second cross was knocked into the area. The ball was strongly headed into the far corner, with the ball just out of Martin Bell's reach.

The second half started similar to the first, with Dynamos on the attack. The home side forced a couple of corners and had a few half chances, but nothing that really tested the keeper. Hurst were always a threat going forward, and even at this early stage, the game was beginning to get stretch.

The home side picked up a couple of injuries, which seem to distract Eastbourne from their game plan. Hurst managed to use this to their advantage as they went looking to take the lead.

Hurst were awarded a penalty after their striker had a shot from the edge of the area, which bounced back off the cross bar, just as the Hurst winger was waiting to knock the loose ball in, but Glenn Taylor came in with a challenge. Both players had gone for the high ball and picked up injuries in the process, it wasn't until after the ball had been cleared that the referee awarded the penalty. Hurst made no mistake with the penalty as they lead 3-2.

Dynamos were still trying to reorganise, and were giving the ball away in silly places. Hurst punished them again when Dynamos had a throw level with their area. The pass didn't really go to anyone and the visitors picked up the loose ball. With the defence back-tracking, the striker shot just before Peters could get in a challenge, the ball flew past a diving Martin Bell and just inside the near post.

Hurst looked like they might start to run away with it, but Dynamos battled on and started to create a few chances of their own. Time was on their side, although Dynamos growing injury list looked like it might cause them problems.

The home side got right back into the game with about 15 minutes remaining. Miles Chambis managed to get past the defender in the box, but was tripped as he went past and the referee awarded the third penalty of the game. Taylor again tucked the ball away as Eastbourne had something to fight for.

Hurst made a few changes, which seemed to douse their attacking threat. It was still there, but it allowed Dynamos to pen Hurst into their half, forcing the visitors to use the counter attack.

Lewis Colegate was proving a real threat since coming on, while Eastbourne seemed to force a number of corners, but it was the equaliser they couldn't find.

Stephen Fletcher had Dynamos best chance, as he met a cross from the left, he rose highest only to see his header saved by the keeper. Taylor and Drummond also had half chances, but they went just wide of the post.

It was Hurst to have the final chance, Dynamos had pushed everyone forward for a last corner, only for Hurst to clear, Dynamos were sloppy with the throw and gave away possession, Hurst took it quickly and caught Dynamos on the counter attack. The striker looked to only have the keeper to beat, but just has he pulled back to take the shot, Darren Vine came flying in with a great tackle to win the ball and surely stop a goal.

That proved to be the last action of a very entertaining game, which even the frozen supporters enjoyed. Dynamos put in a brave and determinded performance, but it was Hurst that walked away with 3 points. This is the level of performance that Eastbourne need to be producing every week.
