Eastbourne's countdown to an early season's finish continued with a visit to the Sports Park to play local rivals Red Lion. Red Lion have a good record against Dynamos, with Eastbourne's only victory coming in the League Cup.
The game started at a slow and quiet pace, with neither team looking like they were going to take it by the scruff of the neck.
Dynamos looked the more dangerous in the early periods of the game, but Eastbourne failed to test the keeper and the Lion defence managed to clear without too many problems.
The hosts had the best chances of the first half, with their winger managing to get behind the Eastbourne defence. He rounded the keeper before hitting his shot wide. Their second chance came when Lion worked the ball down the right, before having a shot from an angle which looked to be going in until Darren Vine superbly hooked the ball away from under the bar and away for a corner.
Dynamos best chance of the half came when they finally managed to put some good passes together as they attacked down the right. Jamie Drummond had the chance, but his control gave the keeper the opportunity to close the gap, and a combination of him and defenders managed to smuggle the ball away before the referee some how decided on awarding a free kick to the defending team.
Lion made the breakthrough right before half time, the worked the ball well across the Dynamos box from right to left, the Eastbourne defence was outnumbered at the back and the striker managed to get his shot away which took a slight deflection on the way through. The ball flew out of the reach of Martin Bell and just inside the post.
The wind was picking up and the second half Dynamos would be playing with it, which should have worked to their advantage, but any hopes of Eastbourne getting an early goal and getting level were soon quashed when Red Lion doubled their lead.
They passed their way through the centre of the defence before firing low past Bell's right side.
Eastbourne were enjoying a bit more possession, but not enough of it was in the last third and they weren't testing the keeper when they were.
Lion soon had the game sown up early in the second half when they scored a third. Lion's striker picked up the ball in the box and had all the time in the world to pick his spot with Bell left completely exposed.
Red Lion then set back for the rest of the game, with Bell never really tested from then on. Dynamos continued to press forward and did make some headway, but most of their efforts went wide while Drummond went closest with and shot from outside the area. The ball rattled the crossbar before going over.
The referee blew up on a lot of niggley free kicks when he should have really played the advantage on several occasions when Dynamos were on the break.
The game was a rather low key affair compared to what everyone involved was probably expecting, in the end Lion kept up their promotion hopes while Dynamos slipped further down the league. In fairness, Eastbourne will feel that the score line flattered their hosts, but it was Lion who had the better chances and took them when it counted. The two will meet again in 3 weeks time, when Dynamos will hope to have some of their key players back in the fold.
