Eastbourne Dynamos last game of the season saw them travel to Battle to face Battle Rangers. Rangers had already secured a 3-2 victory over their visitors when the two met in the reverse fixture back in September.
This game saw Dynamos open strongly with tons of pace. But for all Eastbourne's early pressure, it was the hosts who had the first shot on target with Martin Bell punching the ball over the bar following a shot from outside the area where Dynamos had failed to clear.
Eastbourne did manage to take a fortunate lead after Battle had blocked Neil Taylor's first attempt at a cross into the danger area, but his second attempt saw the ball loop high with the keeper looking like he was going to claim unchallenged. But then he seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball, he juggled the ball before fumbling it into the net.
It wasn't long before Taylor had double his and Eastbourne's tally. Dynamos broke with pace with Taylor starting off the move from the edge of his own area. Dynamos worked the ball well down the right before Mark Goodwin managed to get behind the defence. Alex Speirs missed his low cross, but Taylor was on hand to side foot the ball high into the net past the keeper.
Eastbourne had a few half chances with Stephen Fletcher having a shot blocked and Goodwin firing over. Dean Pugh and Lloyd Taylor both saw shots go wide, while Battle were getting more into the game, when Eastbourne should have been in control, they were still rushing when in possession and were allowing Battle to push forward.
Dynamos then shot themselves in the foot by letting Battle back into the game. Goodwin tried to clear the ball but was forced back towards his own goal, his pass back to Bell didn't have enough on it and was intercepted by the Rangers striker who managed to get round Bell and slot into the net to make it 2-1.
With Battle now looking for the equaliser, Dynamos could have been forgiven for looking for half time already, but just before the break, Eastbourne managed to restore their two-goal advantage.
A ball in from the left was heading for Fletcher at the back post, but the defender managed to get something on it while bundling Fletcher over. The keeper tried to clear the ball but just succeeded in playing it against Fletcher who managed to bundle it into the net.
The half time team talk should have been easy with Eastbourne cruising against a tricky opponent. But silly arguing ensued, which left some players wondering what they were witnessing. Dynamos have still not cut out the bickering that on another day could have lost them points.
The second half saw Battle enjoy a lot more possession, with Dynamos seemingly missing the urgency that they had in the first half. Dynamos struggled to create clear-cut chances, but the ones they did, forced the keeper to make some good saves.
Battle wasted some good chances to get back into the game, with Bell making some good saves. Dynamos were giving their hosts far to much time and space.
With the second half looking like it was going to pass without any sort of incident to speak of. But then the last few minutes saw a wave of goals. Dynamos worked the ball wide before Jamie Drummond crossed for Neil Taylor to stoop and head in to complete his hat-trick.
Battle moved to close the gap again, and managed to get a second. Dynamos felt there was a handball by the Battle defender in the build up, but their complaints feel on deaf ears. The ball was then played over the Eastbourne defence, Burke tried to muscle the striker off the ball who was much faster, Burke tried to muscle the striker off the ball but did seem to foul him and the referee awarded a penalty. The Rangers player sent Bell the wrong way to reduced Dynamos lead to just two.
But then with time nearly up, Eastbourne hit their fifth. Glenn Taylor last's attempt at a goal this season was ambitious to say the least. But his shot found Fletcher, whose first touch took him past the defender, he looked to have gone too wide, but managed to find the far corner for his second goal of the game.
Eastbourne have now hit five on their last two visits to Battle, and this victory is a far cry from how Dynamos finished last season. Eastbourne must now wait to see where they finish up this season. With other teams having games in hand, Dynamos can see themselves drop down the table. But their last three victories' to end the season has put them in a good position. Dynamos now have a very good chance of finishing higher than last season's fifth place.
