Eastbourne Dynamos returned to league action this week to face Hawkhurst United at Old Town Rec.
Manager Gary Taylor made three changes to his squad from last week's extra time defeat. Rossi Williams and Alex Speirs were missing because of injury, with Alex Stannard and David Payne replacing them, and Christian Corder-Courtier replacing Ben Curwood.
Simon Burke and Lewis Colegate took their place in the starting line-ups in place of the injured players.
The home side dominated the opening period of the game, with the visitors taking time to adjust to the awful slope on the pitch. Dynamos hassled and were winning the first and second balls while looking dangerous on the attack.
Dynamos had a couple of half chances before they actually took the lead through Alan Doyle's deflected shot. Doyle shot from outside the area after picking up a loose ball and saw it take a deflection before looping over the stranded keeper and into the net.
Colegate missing a glorious opportunity to double the hosts lead. Neil Taylor cleverly got round his man, and his low shot was well saved by the keeper, but Colegate was following up on the loose ball but his volley went over the bar.
Colegate made amends shortly after when he chased a brilliant defence-splitting pass from Taylor, his feet was clipped as the defender chased back and the referee awarded a penalty. Taylor stepped up to slot away for his second goal of the season.
Eastbourne then seemed to get sloppy with possession and this allowed Hawkhurst to push forward. They had now were pressing Dynamos and it was them who were winning the first and second balls.
Eastbourne were pushed further and further back, while not keeping hold of the ball when they won it back. Dynamos rushed passes and were giving the ball away far to easily.
United pulled a goal back when Dynamos failed to clear a cross and the Hawkhurst player was on hand at the back post to get the visitors right back in the game.
Hawkhurst were then awarded a penalty and a great chance to draw level. Jason Robinson was adjudged to have handled the ball when he jumped to challenge a high ball. As he swung round his arm knocked the ball behind him and the ref pointed to the spot.
Luckily for Eastbourne the Hawkhurst player didn't make clean contact with the ball and it went harmlessly wide. This was probably the wakeup call the Dynamos needed and they had managed to escape with their lead intact.
Eastbourne managed to get to half time with the score still at 2-1. The second half was a much more tight and even affair. Both teams had chances to add to the scoreline, but poor finishing and bad luck stopped either of them from doing that.
Hawkhurst went closest, a long throw into the box was flicked by a United player in the box and it bounced off of the bar and out for a goal kick.
Martin Bell was called into action when United managed to get round the back of the Eastbourne defence twice. He made two great saves, coupled with some desperate defending by the Dynamos players as they managed to keep the Reds at bay.
Taylor and Stephen Fletcher both had good chances for Dynamos. Taylor saw his first time shot fly inches past the post after a cross from the left, while Fletcher saw his shot saved by the keeper after managing to escape his marker, Dean Pugh touch let him down in the follow up and the ball drifted wide of the empty goal.
The final whistle went with Hawkhurst on the attack and Dynamos had secured their first league win of the season. The League campaign will take a break for the next three weeks as Eastbourne turn their attentions to Sussex County Jnr Cup as well as the two Eastbourne Cups.
