Match Report

Dynamos faced last season's Division 3 Champions, Hurst, in the Eastbourne Junior Cup First Round this week. Eastbourne were looking to get further in this Cup competition than they did last year when they were knocked out of the competition in the second round.

The only change to last weeks starting eleven was Richard Payne coming in for the absent Christian Corder-Courtier in defence.

Dynamos recorded their fastest ever goal as they got off to the best possible start against their Division 2 opponents. A long ball down field from the kickoff had to be dealt with by the defender, but under pressure, his header back to the keeper was too short and Neil Taylor pounced to slot away and give the visitors the lead.

Eastbourne could, and maybe should have further ahead as Hurst looked disorganized at the back but Dynamos capitalized on poor clearances but put their efforts wide or straight at the keeper.

The first 20 minutes, Dynamos were the better team and had more chances. Taylor had chances to increase his tally, while Stephen Fletcher, Lewis Colegate and Dean Pugh all missed go opportunities to increase their lead.

As the half wore on, Hurst got more of a foothold in the game, as the challenges started flying in, somehow the referee managed to keep his cards in his pocket.

Hurst then made the breakthrough as they started enjoying the majority of possession, their striker managed to loft the ball over Martin Bell and into the net.

The second half saw Hurst enjoy most of the possession while Dynamos were getting sloppy in possession and started to cause problems of their own. Hurst had a couple of good chance, one hit the post, but luck, coupled with some good saves by Bell and some last ditch defending kept the scores level.

Eventually the chances for Hurst seemed to dry up as Dynamos established themselves once again in the game.

Dynamos then took the lead again, when Taylor's cross from the left was headed in by Fletcher as he got above the defender.

Rossi Williams then got his first competitive goal for the club when he managed to brush past his defender before sliding the ball past the keeper to give Dynamos a healthy 3-1 lead.

Hurst responded with the first chance they got, when their midfielder was unmarked at the back post and managed to volley past Bell to narrow the deficit.

Dynamos could have sealed the game, Fletcher missed a glorious chance when one on one with the keeper, but the keeper got down well to save.

Minutes later, Colegate was also guilty of missing a brilliant chance when his touch let the ball get away from him and the keeper managed to block.

Hurst then leveled with about 15 minutes to go, Bell dived for the ball but was too late and brought down the player instead and the ref instantly pointed to the spot. Bell got a hand to the penalty, but not enough behind it to keep it out.

Bell then made amends with two great saves, one diving save to his left to keep out a goal-bound effort. Then with minutes to go, a cross from the right was headed at the back post towards the top corner, only for Bell to somehow claw the ball away when a goal seemed certain.

The game went to extra time and both teams had chances to win the game. Fletcher was unlucky with one chance when the ball just wouldn't fall right when collecting the ball over the defence. And Alex Speirs also went close with a low drive. At the other end, Jason Robinson had to clear the ball off the line with Bell out of his goal and the ball dropping into the net.

Penalties were needed to decide the game, Hurst went first a scored, with Williams first for Dynamos and slotted his calmly away. Bell then saved well, but Richard Payne saw his hit the post after sending the keeper the wrong way.

Bell then performed more heroics by saving again, and Alan Doyle converted to give Dynamos a 2-1 lead after 3 penalties. Hurst converted their next penalty and Darren Vine made sure Dynamos kept their lead, Hurst needed to score their last penalty to have any chance but saw their effort got high and wide to give Dynamos the victory.

Eastbourne go through after an exhausting game which could have gone either way. Dynamos will feel a great sense of achievement having beating Hurst after two defeats last season, but will be disappointed that they let a 3-1 lead slip away. A good performance though from Eastbourne has sent the standard that will be expected from now on.
