Eastbourne Dynamos participated in their fourth different Cup competition this season when they visited Winkney Seniors in the Eastbourne Challenge Cup.
Manager Gary Taylor made a couple of changes from the team that beat Hurst last week. Captain Jason Robinson picked up an injury in training on Wednesday so Simon Burke partnered Richard Payne at the heart of defence with Ben Curwood making his first start of the season at left back. Rossi Williams also replaced Lewis Colegate on the right of midfield.
A scrappy opening few minutes from both sides on a rock solid surface saw Dynamos take an early lead. The home side failed to clear a cross from the right and Dean Pugh's half volley went over the keeper and into the net.
Winkney pushed forward at every opportunity and made Dynamos look very uncomfortable at times. Dynamos were sloppy in possession and caused a lot of their own problems. The home side were threatening to score but at the moment that was all it was.
Dynamos on the other hand were taking their chances. A back pass to the keeper was poorly cleared after being closed down by Neil Taylor, the ball feel straight to Stephen Fletcher outside the area who stabbed the ball with the outside of his foot to lob the backtracking keeper and give Dynamos a 2-0 lead.
The visitors were soon 3-0 up when Fletcher scored his second, a long throw into the box wasn't dealt with well by the Winkney defence and Fletcher was on hand to sweep the ball home.
Neil Taylor added to Dynamos lead and got himself on the score sheet. His first attempt was well blocked by the defender, but the ball came back to Taylor who managed to side step the defender before curling the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Eastbourne had to reshuffle their line-up when Simon Burke went off injured after feeling his knee go.
Winkney then punished Eastbourne for being sloppy in possession, they raced through on goal, beating the offside trap, and although Martin Bell came out to narrow the angle, the striker managed to find the back of the net with a very cool finish.
Eastbourne soon restored their advantage. Another long throw into the box was only cleared to Lewis Colegate who managed to guide his shot through a crowd of players and into the far corner.
Although Eastbourne where 5-1 up, they were not playing well, and the half time team talk seemed to have no effect on the players as the second half was even worse. Had Winkney been able to take any one of their numerous chances the game may have ended a lot closer. A combination of poor finishing, bad luck, last ditch defending and good keeping somehow kept the home side out.
Winkney hit the post twice, which should have been the wakeup call Eastbourne needed, but Dynamos still seemed lethargic all over the pitch.
One good bit of Dynamos play enabled them to score the first goal of the second half with about 20 minutes to go. Alan Doyle's brilliant cross field pass found Colegate who beat the defender for pace before finding the back of the net with a confident finish for his second of the game.
Pugh came close to adding to his personal tally, but was denied by the post after beating two defenders.
Doyle then added a seventh when he raced through on goal with defenders nowhere to be seen. He had all the time in the world to emphatically riffle the ball past a helpless keeper.
Substitute David Payne had a good chance to get his goal for the club, but couldn't keep his shot on target under the close attentions of the Winkney defender.
Eastbourne's final chance fell to Colegate as he looked to get his hat trick. Pugh beat the defender along the by-line before putting in a dangerous ball, with Colegate nearly on the goal line, the ball seemed to just hit him before going over.
Dynamos are back to League action next week after 3 victories in Cup competitions. They will have to play better than they did this week if they hope to move up the table. The score line probably flatters Dynamos, but they will feel their performances in their previous matches this season more than makes up for it.
