Eastbourne Dynamos returned to league action this week, already a number of games behind everyone else because of their participation in Cup Competitions. This meant victory against Magham Down was essential if they are to keep up with the other teams and not fall behind.
Stephen Fletcher was the only player missing from last weeks starting eleven, so Lewis Colegate partnered Neil Taylor up front, while Dayle Courtier took up the right midfield position.
Magham Down enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, playing with the slight wind. Eastbourne rushed when in possession, putting themselves under pressure.
Too many times Dynamos looked for the killer ball too early, wasting possession. Magham Down had a number of corners, one of which was heading to the top hand corner until Dean Pugh managed to get enough of his head on the ball to divert it wide.
The referee frustrated both sets of players by not letting the game flow and giving free kicks for silly little fouls, and missing the ones the maybe should have been free kicks.
He caused confusion to everyone when he stopped the game while Dynamos were on the attack. Then walked over to have a word with a supporter and send him away from the pitch. He then awarded Dynamos a free kick. As the home side pushed forward, he then changed his mind and awarded the free kick to Magham Down. The referee didn't make it clear he had changed his mind and Magham took the kick quickly while Dynamos were still pushing forward. This caused Dynamos to surround the Ref once Eastbourne had managed to clear the danger.
Martin Bell made a fantastic save when the Down midfielder unleashed a ferocious shot from outside the area, Bell managed to tip it over the bar.
At the other end, Lewis Colegate had two attempts on target but didn't get enough power into his shots and the keeper collected with ease.
Eastbourne had defended pretty well, and kept Bell pretty well protected. At half time the game was still goalless.
Dynamos went straight on the attack from the kick off and enjoyed a lot more of the ball in the second half.
Neil Taylor got the first real chance of the second half, but his shot was well saved by the keeper.
Dynamos took the lead when Alan Doyle was hacked down in the area. One Magham player took his protest too far and was shown a straight red card for swearing at the referee. Neil Taylor sent the keeper the wrong way to score yet another penalty for Dynamos, and his 61st goal for the club.
The home side managed to keep things tight at the back, and needed to keep hold of their lead. A few tasty tackles flew in and things threatened to boil over. Magham pushed forward but Eastbourne held strong and kept their discipline.
Dynamos needed a second goal to secure the game, and it eventually came. Dayle Courtier's cross from the right couldn't be controlled by Alex Speirs in the box, but fell nicely for Neil Taylor who slotted past the keeper as he was coming onto the ball.
Eastbourne had a couple of half chances to extend their lead, and finally got a third. Christian Corder-Courtier's free kick, just inside the Magham half, found Colegate who managed to get round the back, and hit a sweet volley that nestled in the far corner of the net with the keeper helpless.
Dynamos have now secured 5 victories in a row, their best ever run. But that will be severely tested when they return to Cup action next week when Polegate Town, who are top of the East Sussex Premier, visit Old Town in the Eastbourne Cup.
