Eastbourne Dynamos had a rare League game this weekend when Hollington United visited Old Town Rec. Dynamos normal pitch was still recovering from last week's game, so they had to revert to one of the sloping pitches.
Manager Gary Taylor had to make a number of changes due to unavailability from some players, with Damien Mills benefiting with his first start for the club.
It was the visitors that started off the better, and looked more potent going forward. Dynamos on the other hand took a while to settle, rushing when in possession and giving the ball away.
The hosts survived a few scares before Hollington took the lead. Dynamos conceded a weak free kick, but didn't clear well enough. The ball fell to the feet of a Hollington player just inside the area, he managed to steer the ball through a crowd of players, past keeper Martin Bell and into the net.
The goal was a wake up call for the home side, and started to spread the ball round well. They pushed forward and were started to look more likely to score. The equaliser came when Shaun Peters had a shot from outside the area which took a few deflections on its way goalwards, both goalkeeper and defender hesitated, but Neil Taylor didn't and stabbed home the ball.
Hollington nearly had their lead back, Dean Pugh was caught on the ball when trying to clear, but he was closed down and the visitors broke away, the midfielder took an early shot from outside the area but it hit the bar before going over.
Pugh was then at the other end of the pitch making up for his earlier mistake. Pugh closed down the last defender facing his own goal, and his pass back to his keeper was a little short, which Williams got to first before squaring the ball to Pugh who won't have an easier goal this season.
Dynamos continued to push forward, knowing that Hollington were showing speed in attack and were capable of adding to their tally. Williams was again revelling in his roll in attack, and was involved in Dynamos third. His powerful running down the right past two players ended in a cross that found Neil Taylor in the box, but his control gave the keeper the chance to close down and get in a block in. But the loose ball feel to Alex Speirs who calmly placed the ball passed into the net.
Hollington kept going looking for the goal that would get them back into the game. They had a number of corners and Bell was kept on his toes.
Dynamos increased the distance between them and their visitors. Lewis Colegate's persistence down the left, coupled with and neat one-two with Williams, saw him enter the area and ride another challenge before slotting the ball low past the keeper into the far corner for a fine goal.
Hollington started the second half almost as well as they had started the first, they were better in possession and first to every ball. Dynamos eventually started the second half and scored a fifth. Pugh stole the ball from the winger and raced away. He got to the byline and past the defender, then cut the ball back for Williams who found the far corner.
Dynamos could have increased their lead but were wasteful with their chances. Shaun Peters went close with a long-range free kick but that was over the bar. While Williams went close with another free kick, this time the keeper fumbled it over the bar.
Taylor didn't get enough on a difficult header after Pugh had beaten his defender before getting a cross in.
Pugh went close himself late on when he picked up a loose clearance before shooting from distance, only for it to go over the bar.
Hollington had a few late chances to reduce the deficit, but Bell was comfortable enough and Dynamos defended well to keep them out. The visitors also had a late shout for a penalty when a goal-bound effort took a couple of deflections with Hollington crying for handball, but the referee waved away their protests.
Eastbourne secured another victory as the rain finally started, this time an important one in the league with Dynamos so far behind everyone else. Next week will see Dynamos face the team who currently sit top of the table in another important league fixture.
