Another home game survived at Old Town this week as other games around the county continue to suffer because of the weather. Mayfield were the visitors for Dynamos this week. Manager Gary Taylor opting for just the one change to last week's starting line-up.
A scrappy opening few minutes saw the home side emerge with the upper hand in possession. Mayfield rarely threatened Martin Bell as Eastbourne enjoyed a lot of the ball, but were wasteful with it. Dynamos also failed to really test the visiting keeper, although there were a few half chances.
Mayfield had to be on their guard as Dynamos forced a series of corners but couldn't force the ball over the line.
Dynamos were then awarded a soft penalty as Alan Doyle's surge into the box was halted when the defender dived in, although there didn't seem to be much contact as Doyle fell to his knees. Once the spot was found in an awful penalty area, Neil Taylor saw his kick saved as the keeper guessed right and palmed away the ball, Dynamos couldn't capitalize on the loose ball and had to settle for another corner.
Dynamos were claiming for another penalty a few minutes later, when a free-kick was curled in, the ball seemed to brush the defenders arm, Stephen Fletcher played on and saw his shot take a big deflection off Shaun Peters to divert the ball past the keeper and into the net to hand Eastbourne the lead.
The home side managed a few bits of play that looked something like the football they are capable of, but never looked like hitting the sort of form that they had before the winter break.
Dynamos were punished for their sloppy play just before half time. Doyle's pass was intercepted on the half way line. Mayfield broke away and had time to get the ball into the box. It was played down the line for the midfielder to cut the ball back to his team-mate standing at the back post for an easy finish to bring his side level.
There wasn't enough time for Dynamos to reply as the half time whistle went. The second half saw Mayfield get on top. They were first to every ball and Dynamos were camped in their own half. Eastbourne survived a few scares before Mayfield took the lead. A long throw into the box was headed on by the big Mayfield player and the ball went over the defence and keeper, dipping just under the bar and into the net.
The visitors were nearly further ahead, Eastbourne failed to defend well enough and Mayfield passed their way through before an opening presented itself. The Mayfield players effort from outside the area was well saved by Bell who managed to get down and stop the ball.
This seemed to be the kick up the backside that Eastbourne needed and soon started chasing every ball. Dynamos needed a quick reply and had to wait 5 minutes before they were level again. Fletcher did well to get round his defender and get to the byline, he managed to cut the ball back for Taylor who slotted in for the equaliser. The linesman flag went up for offside, again, but the referee correctly ignored the flag and allowed the goal.
Eastbourne were back in the lead again with their next chance. Dean Pugh's cross from the left was met by Lewis Colegate charging in at the back post who headed past the keeper to make it 3-2.
Taylor nearly had his second of the game when he volleyed a cross from the right against the bar before being cleared by the defence.
The home side were looking much better on the ball now and controlling the game before adding a fourth. Colegate did good work down the right wing again before getting in a cross, the defender and keeper tried to get to the ball but Taylor got in front and headed into the net.
Eastbourne were enjoying their football now, and good football from the midfield was followed by good work down the left. Taylor again involved and playing it square to Fletcher, who managed to get past the defender before firing in. As Dynamos celebrated the linesman once again had his flag up, but how anyone could have been offside is anyones guess. The referee disallowed the goal and a free kick was awarded.
Dynamos were kept on their heels at the other end, and Darren Vine's sliced clearance had Bell scrambling back only to see it just go over the bar and out for a corner.
Fletcher finally got his goal, again Dynamos did well down the wings, some good passing before Colegate picked out Fletcher who had took one touch before he found the bottom corner for Dynamos fifth.
Eastbourne will be happy with another win, but will want to continue the sort of football they played at the end of this game, and not the awful display they showed in the first half.
Next week sees the return of the Sussex County Cup, Eastbourne would probably rather be playing more league games with the possibility of evening games and double headers looming large.
