Dynamos took the long trip to Cuckfield for the chance to see them reach their first ever Sussex County Cup Quarter Final.
Just the two changes from last weeks starting eleven. Damien Mills coming in at left back, with Alex Speirs replacing the injured Dayle Courtier in midfield. On the bench saw Jason Robinson make a rare appearance, with new signing Michael Franklin making the squad for the first time.
The game was delayed because the referee failed to show, but once it did get underway, it was the home side that settled quicker and forced Eastbourne to defend. The height advantage was giving Town the edge as they managed to win most things in the air.
It didn't take long for the East Sussex side to get a foothold in the game. Martin Bell in the Eastbourne goal was only troubled from distance, while Cuckfield looked more dangerous down the wings, but Darren Vine and Damien Mills did well with cutting out that. Shaun Peters and Christian Corder-Courtier looked solid at the back and kept Bells goal well protected. Alan Doyle and Speirs worked well in the middle of the park, getting through the miles while putting their foot in when needed.
Neil Taylor and Stephen Fletcher didn't get much service in the first half, while Lewis Colegate saw more action down the right hand side than Dean Pugh on the left.
The first half was a tight affair with no real efforts to talk about. Bell had to make one diving save from distance while both sides had their fair share of corners, but most efforts were off target.
The second half was to be a little more open, with Cuckfield really looking for the goal with Dynamos happy to catch them on the break. Again it was the home side that started off the half the better, settling quick and going straight for goal.
Town had a period of about 5 minutes where they managed to force a couple of corners, one of which led to an effort coming off the bar. They took the lead with a huge slice of luck, another corner was only half cleared by the Dynamos defence before being blocked. Peters then attempted to clear again only for it to be blocked, the ball cannoned in of the post with Bell scrambling across trying to keep it out.
Dynamos heads didn't drop, and why should they? They had enough time left where chances were bound to come.
The visitors stepped up a gear, while the home side looked like they were trying to close out the game already.
Eastbourne forced a couple of corners which look like they could lead to something but it was getting the final touch that was missing. Colegate was doing brilliantly getting in crosses from the right, but Cuckfield managed to clear the ball. The keeper intercepted when Fletcher squared in the six yard box with Pugh waiting for a simple tap in.
The equaliser came when Peters floated in another cross from a free kick on the right, Doyle managed to make enough of a nuisance for the keeper and the defender to take their eye off the ball, and as it bounced loose in the box, Taylor was first to react to head into an empty net over a pile of bodies.
Cuckfield forced a couple of chances, but nothing clear-cut. It was the visitors who closed out the ninety minutes looking more likely to win. First Peters had a wicked long-range effort palmed over the bar. Then came a Dynamos corner which was first headed down by Fletcher who saw his goal-bound effort beaten away by the keeper, Peters was first to the ball, only for his effort to ripple to side netting from a tight angle.
Extra time saw Eastbourne start the better, and were rewarded with an early goal to change the complete flow of the game. Dynamos looked more like their normal self and passed it well and worked the ball down the right. Franklin's cross was only half cleared by the home side, with Doyle prowling on the edge of the area, his first time shot saw Fletcher dive out of the balls path before it nestled into the bottom left hand corner.
Cuckfield now had to chase the ball and began forcing a few corners, but they were guilty of wasting the ball at times and lacked a striker with a killer instinct. Bell saved well a couple of times, and did well to run down the clock when he could.
The second half saw the game continue to be a tight affair, but Cuckfield's effort's went mostly off target, Eastbourne on the other hand were just happy to play on the break, defending brilliantly. Richard Payne replaced Fletcher to bring a little freshness and steel to the midfield.
Dynamos put daylight between them and their hosts, Eastbourne played the ball from left to right before Franklin played in Vine. His initial touch looked a little heavy, but his second saw the ball rifle into the top left hand corner and off the bar for a truly memorable goal.
Town cranked up the pressure, desperately looking for a goal to get back into the game with time running out. Bell saved a couple of times, while a goalmouth scramble seemed to last forever before Dynamos finally managed to clear. Another chance saw their right midfield get past Bell but with the ball rolling towards goal, Mills cleared for a corner.
The game was over when Dynamos scored a fourth to cap off a great game. Pugh and Doyle pressured Town's defence, Doyle then intercepted a pass and raced through on goal, calmly slotting past the keeper to confirm his sides appearance in the Quarter Finals.
Eastbourne were clearly happy to have progressed in this competition, and nice to hear the home supporters comment on what an enjoyable cup tie it had been to watch. A game played with real spirit, and two teams attempting to play good football and both currently having good seasons. And a note that the stand-in ref was very fair, even calling his own team by their numbers and not their names.
