Match Report

Another home game for Eastbourne, their 7th in a row in the league, this week against Beulah Baptists. Dynamos have never lost to Beulah, but were more intent on keeping their 100 percent home record.

After missing out last week because of the snow, Eastbourne were keen to get back to playing football. No surprises with the team this week as Gary Taylor only made the one change at right back due to Darren Vine not being available. He was replace by Richard Payne.

The home side started brightly, looking to get at the visitors who hadn't played a game for a while and take advantage of any rustiness that might be evident.

Although Dynamos had more possession in the first half, the game was niggly, with free kicks and yellow cards being handed out like they were going out of fashion. There was no flow to the game and a few incidents the referee had to deal with.

Lewis Colegate had Dynamos first real chance, he raced clean through passed his defender before seeing his shot well saved by the keeper. Alan Doyle then had a chance but saw his effort come back off the post from an angle.

Martin Bell was then lucky to still be on the pitch after racing out of his area when Beulah were breaking away. He got nowhere near the ball, but sent the striker flying sideways. The only reason Bell was only given a yellow card was because of two covering defenders getting back in time meant he wasn't the last man, showing how far out of his goal he had actually come!

Dean Pugh and Colegate where doing well down the wings, but Dynamos were only clicking into gear for a few passes before it was breaking down.

With 10 minutes to go before half time, Eastbourne started to look like they might find a way through. Colegate then had a decent header from a corner blocked on the line before being cleared.

Alex Speirs then controlled before being fouled right outside the area, the referee couldn't have been any closer. Doyle stepped up and fired the ball through everyone and into the far side of the goal to give the home side the lead.

After a few minutes, Eastbourne had doubled their lead. Baptists had a corner and were close to drawing level. The ball landed at the back post with Shaun Peters facing his own goal, as he attempted to clear, the Beulah striker fired goal wards with Bell making an instinctive save, before the ball was launched forward by the defence and Dynamos were on the counter. Colegate received the ball at the other end and he was brought down by the keeper having just knocked the ball past him with Doyle and Neil Taylor waiting. The ref pointed to the spot and now both keepers were on yellow cards.

Taylor coolly slotted away the resulting penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way. Dynamos didn't really deserve to be in such a good position at half time, and a few home truths were aired not only from the manager, but from the senior players in the team as well. A few years ago everything would have been so different from the high expectations and team spirit of today.

The second half slowly click through the gears and seemed more relaxed than the first, looking more intent on putting in a better performance that than the first, but it took a few minutes before they actually looked better.

A few half chances came Eastbourne's way before they increased their lead and settled their nerves. Speirs floated in a free kick from the left, and as the Beulah defence went missing, Stephen Fletcher stretched out his leg to poke to ball towards goal. The keeper saved but with Eastbourne closing in, Pugh was first to the ball to score from close range.

Dynamos were to have the next 10-15 minutes, where they put clear distance between themselves and the visitors and secure all three points as the goal seemed to give the team confidence.

Speirs' short corner was crossed in by Pugh, and Fletcher with his back to goal and in mid-air, back-healed the ball into the net at the near post for a very flamboyant goal.

Pugh then went on good run when he won the ball off the fullback just inside the Beulah half, then raced into the box and around the keeper before squaring for Fletcher who had one of the easiest of tap-ins.

Pugh was then at it again as he rounded his defender before squaring for Doyle to score his second of the game with Eastbourne players now queuing up to get in on the act.

Eastbourne were now cruising and now able to make changes early on and give their subs a good run-out.

The hosts looked like they could score on every attack, while Beulah were still looking for their first goal. They had a couple of half chances, but Christian Corder-Courtier and Shaun Peters had another fine display in defence and Bell was never really troubled. Payne and Damien Mills both were allowed to bomb forward and get involved.

Speirs had a couple of efforts from distance, but his best effort cannoned of the bar from just outside the area after Beulah had half cleared a corner.

Dynamos added seventh as Michael Franklin again raced through on goal, now causing their defence a different kind of problem, the defender got back, his challenge only helping in poking the ball past his own keeper and into the net.

Eastbourne then got sloppy in possession, seeming as though they expected the game to be over, Beulah kept on going and were rewarded with a consolation goal. They got down the right and crossed for the striker to head in unchallenged at the near post.

Eastbourne soon restored their seven goal advantage, Lewis Colegate got to a high ball before the keeper to slip it past him leaving him with an open goal which he then tried to burst the net, making sure the ball was in.

Doyle had the last effort, seeing his shot go just wide of the post when it looked like he might just secure his hat-trick.

Eastbourne had secured their biggest ever league win, and goals a long way in helping with their goal difference, especially when the other teams around them secured high scoring wins as well.

Disappointment in the ranks at not keeping a clean sheet shows how high the expectations have grown over recent months. Lets hope the good form continues another win next week will do the confidence no harm going into the County Cup Quarter Final.
