Eastbourne Dynamos travelled to Kent to face a Hawkhurst United side sitting joint top in the table. This game was only Eastbourne's second away league game of the season, with their last league away to Eastbourne Galaxy.
A couple of changes to the side where forced on manager Gary Taylor with Darren Vine being unavailable, so Dayle Courtier slotted in at right back with Michael Franklin getting his first start of the season with Lewis Colegate given a rest.
Both sides needed to win this game to further their chances of success in the league. Dynamos have a number of games on the sides above them but its points they would rather have.
An open first few minutes saw the game swing from end to end, both sides creating chances. Shaun Peters and Christian Corder-Courtier both had to be on their toes as possession exchanged hands several times. Dayle Coutier and Damien Mills both had their work cut out for them with Hawkhurst looking to get down the wings as much as they could.
Stephen Fletcher should have had a penalty when he was fouled by the defender, but the referee played on and Fletchers shot was off balance and saw the keeper save low to his left.
Hawkhurst opened the scoring when Dynamos only half cleared a cross from the right, the ball fell to their big striker who's shot from outside the area curled into the bottom left hand corner. Dynamos claimed there was an offside in the build-up to the goal, with the linesman flag raised, but the referee overruled.
Dynamos have shown resilience this season when falling behind, and this showed again as they equalised 5 minutes later. Alan Doyle surged through the middle of the park only to see his first attempt saved by the keeper, Doyle managed to retrieve the loose ball and fired goalwards from a tight angle, not sure that the ball was on target, Dean Pugh made certain by tapping in from a yard out.
10 minutes later and Dynamos had turned the game around. Again Doyle found himself clean through on goal, this time a cheeky chip over the onrushing keeper saw it dip nicely under the bar and into the net to put the away side 2-1 up.
Hawkhurst were almost level when their striker strode forward unchallenged and let fire, a brilliant diving save from keeper Martin Bell tipped it round the post and out for a corner.
Eastbourne missed a couple of chances to put daylight between themselves and their hosts, Neil Taylor and Doyle both went close with chances. Just before half time, Pugh's square ball for Fletcher was just out of his reach with only the keeper to beat.
The second half saw Dynamos start slowly, and a change in formation for United seemed to have the desired effect when only a few minutes in, their winger found space on the left. His cross was not dealt with by the Eastbourne defence or the keeper, the ball was only helped on its way and a low diving header from the Hawkhurst player at the back post drew the teams level.
Both teams exchanged possession with neither team really taking control. A few half chances from each side threatened to give one side the advantage. Alex Speirs went close for Dynamos when his curling right-footed shot went just over the bar.
Franklin was causing problems down the right, putting in some dangerous crosses. One cross found Taylor whose header was well saved by the keeper.
Peters was venturing forward now more and more, and it reaped great rewards for Dynamos. Peters collected a throw-in from the right, and with his second touch took a fierce shot from around 30 yards. It rattled the cross bar with the keeper beaten, the ball bounced on the line, Taylor was first to react and finish the job to put Eastbourne in the lead again with his 20th goal of the season.
As the game neared the finish, both sides continued to create chances. Hawkhurst pushed forward searching for their equaliser. They had two great chances to snatch a point, the best one falling to their Number 11 who had time to control before firing over from around the six yard box.
Fletcher then stepped up to secure the points, he intercepted a pass just inside the United half and surged forward getting behind the defence. He picked his moment before guiding the ball past the oncoming keeper and into the net, just as he did last week to give Dynamos the 4-2 win.
Eastbourne secured another league win, which moves them up to second in the table. Dynamos have games in hand on most teams, and that's set to grow as they now take a two-week break from league action. Midweek games are now almost a certainty.
Next week sees the club create their own bit of history as they aim to reach their first ever Cup Final as they face Worthing Leisure in the Sussex Junior Cup Semi Final. We invite all supporters and players to make the short trip to Worthing to support the club.
