Eastbourne Dynamos started their marathon football week with a Eastbourne Junior Cup Quarter Final match against Parkfield.
Dynamos had time to warm-up and get ready as Parkfield had to wait around as their kit got stuck in traffic. As soon as the visitors were ready the game got underway, and it was Parkfield who got off to the better start as Dynamos looked sluggish and were second to the ball.
A few early warning signs where there for the home side as the team from Division 6 were playing the neat passing football the home side are used to playing themselves.
But it was Eastbourne who took an underserved lead when Lewis Colegate got the goal his early hard work deserved. He picked up a throw-in from the right before turning and half-volleying the ball over the keeper and into the far corner for a very good finish.
Parkfield didn't let heads dropped as both sides continuing to create chances, with Parkfield going close and Dynamos having Christian Corder-Courtier and Martin Bell to thank for a late block and then a save to keep the visitors out.
Neil Taylor went close when a loose goal kick fell nicely for him and he sent it straight back, only to see it just bounce wide of the post.
Parkfield equalised when Eastbourne failed to deal with a corner, the visitors wanted the ball more and managed to fire it over the line, and goal they play probably deserved.
Eastbourne wasted a couple of their own chances when they did get the ball down and play, but were wasteful and rushed they attempts and both teams went in all square at the break.
Dynamos shot out the blocks and on the attack for the start of the second half, but it didn't last. There was a sense that Eastbourne either expected to turn up and win or didn't want to go all out because they were saving themselves for the week ahead.
Corder-Courtier and Richard Payne where left exposed on more than one occasion when the Eastbourne midfield failed to trackback and Parkfield came streaming forward. Some good defending from the back four got Eastbourne out of trouble.
Both sides were creating chances as Parkfield continued to play the better football and took the lead from another corner. This time it was headed in from an unmarked player who nodded past the keeper and the men on the line.
Dynamos were forced to up the tempo a little or faced going out of this cup at the Quarter Final stage again. For a period of about 10-15 minutes. Eastbourne started to play football like they know they can.
The home side equalised when Stephen Fletcher was picked out when Neil Taylor slipped in a pass after avoiding the challenge of the defender. Fletcher managed to stay onside before guiding the ball past the keeper for a well-taken goal.
Both fullbacks were getting forward when they could, but it was in the middle where Alan Doyle and Alex Speirs looked outnumbered at times, which was where Eastbourne where having problems.
Dynamos were in the lead again when good work by substitute Michael Franklin down the right culminated with Alan Doyle getting the ball around the penalty mark, his first effort was blocked but he managed to spread the ball left to Dean Pugh who slotted in.
Darren Vine then had to be replaced by Dayle Courtier when he felt a slight strain on his calf.
Pugh was then guilty of missing a glorious opportunity to put daylight between the two teams when Neil Taylor controlled with his back to goal before teeing up Pugh who fired over from just outside the six-yard box.
The game became stretched as the game wore on and Eastbourne looking to counter at speed whenever they could, Dynamos used their last sub when Dave Moran replaced Damien Mills. But just as the game entered injury time, Parkfield broke down the left with Dynamos high up the field, their pacey forward cut inside with defenders chasing back but slotted past Bell and into the far corner before anyone could get near him.
As Dynamos kicked off, the ref blew his whistle to signal the end of 90 minutes, with the scores at 3-3 the game was heading for extra time, something Dynamos didn't want.
Pugh and Franklin started extra time like the second half, running at their fullbacks with pace and trying to create an opening. Pugh got behind his fullback before cutting back for Doyle, who went to shoot only to be clumsily bundled over in the box. The ref pointed to the spot and Neil Taylor stuck away the penalty, although Doyle was left limping from the challenge and had to be left to take up space in attack with manager Gary Taylor having used all his subs.
The game became slow and stretched as both teams tired as extra time wore on. Both teams continued to create chances but neither team could take them.
The ref blew his whistle to end the game. Dynamos have made their second Semi Final this season, although their performances lately need to be improved and fast otherwise they risk finishing the season with nothing and that early season form would have gone to waste.
