Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos produced a much better performance on Bank Holiday Monday against rivals Demon Barbers as they returned to league action with a 3-0 win.

League leaders Galaxy had already extended their lead at the top of the table on Saturday when they beat Hollington while Dynamos were playing in the Cup.

Gary Taylor made a couple of changes. Shaun Peters returned to the team after missing the Cup game and replaced Richard Payne in the middle of defence, while Dayle Courtier came in for the missing Alan Doyle. Michael Franklin replaced Lewis Colegate on the right. The manager clearly trying to keep as many people as possible fresh and half an eye on Wednesday's game.

On another warm and sunny day up in Old Town, it was Dynamos who started better and enjoyed the majority of possession. Alex Speirs and Courtier quickly teamed up well in midfield, while Franklin terrorised the defence with his pace as he constantly looked to get behind the Barbers defence.

A few tasty challenges flew in early doors, but it never threatened to boil over. Christian Corder and Peters worked well in winning the balls in the air, making sure that the visitors couldn't get the ball down and play. Barbers looked more dangerous attacking down the wings, but Darren Vine and Damien Mills did well and were always working hard.

Martin Bell was never really tested, he was only called upon to gather the loose balls and a few corners.

For all Dynamos possession, it took a while for them to really test the keeper. Stephen Fletcher went close, after Neil Taylor played him in, but Fletcher couldn't keep his shot on target and saw it drift wide of the post.

Franklin then did a little better after getting round the full back, but his shot from a very tight angle beat the keeper and came back off the post, and the ball fell kindly for Barbers to clear their lines.

Dynamos did have the ball in the net midway through the half, Mills low cross from the left was tapped in by Fletcher but it was ruled out for offside.

The deadlock was finally broken when a corner from the right was nodded back by Peters, and Fletcher rose to back-heal the ball into the top right-hand corner for a brilliant goal which was very similar to the goal he scored against Hastings Rangers on the same pitch.

The home side quickly doubled their lead when another corner, this time from Speirs on the left, was headed in by Peters from in amongst a crowd of players for his fourth goal of the season.

Dynamos were now in confident mood and now didn't want the half to end. The start of the second half saw Barbers start better and Eastbourne took a while to get going again.

Bell was busier this half, and picked up a few knocks along the way. The first was when the striker lunged for a 50-50 ball and was a little late and caught Bell on the hands as he waited for it to enter the area.

Dynamos had a couple of corners and a few half chances to add to their lead. Dean Pugh was brought down in the area and the referee waved away Dynamos protests for a penalty. Then Vine penalised for a challenge moments later in which he won the ball. A few minutes later, Vine was booked for a late challenge on the same player.

With about 25 minutes remaining, Eastbourne added a third. Fletcher's long pass down the middle was picked up by Franklin who managed to avoid the challenge of the defender before slotting low past the keeper, with the ball going in off the post for his first goal for the club.

As the game wore on, both teams saw half chances come and go, Fletcher had a good header from a corner well saved by the keeper. Franklin went close again, only to see it go over the bar.

Barbers couldn't get the ball out of their area at one point, with Eastbourne keeping the pressure on, but Dynamos failed to capitalise and eventually the chance was gone.

Barbers had a couple of free kicks and long throws where they looked to get a consolation goal, but both teams looked tired as the game edged towards it conclusion, with both teams having played on the Saturday finally taking its toll.

The win moves Eastbourne up to second in the table, and can now no longer finish lower than third. A much better performance than Saturday's showing was reflected in team moral at the end of the game. Hopefully this good form continues as Dynamos get ready from another game on Wednesday against Mayfield.
