Eastbourne Dynamos secured another win on their quest for the Division 3 title with a comprehensive victory over Hollington United, which also insured promotion.
Just a few changes from the team that played midweek with Lewis Colegate returning the starting line up, Damien Mills dropping back to left back, and Michael Franklin replacing the injured Alex Speirs in the middle of the park.
The game started pretty evenly, with both teams surrendering possession and struggling to get used to the strong wind blowing across the pitch.
The Eastbourne defence looked strong with Shaun Peters and Christian Corder-Courtier looking solid at the back, with Darren Vine and Damien Mills looking to get forward and support as much as possible.
Dynamos broke the deadlock on about 10 minutes when Mills found Franklin on the left of the area, he managed to turn and find space before getting a curling shot away. It looked to be going wide but with the defender and keeper hesitating, Neil Taylor sneaked in to stab home the opening goal.
The game continued to be scrappy and swing from end to end. Hollington clearly had pace up front and were looking to use it whenever they could, but Dynamos defence stood strong and limited the home side to long range efforts.
A needless free kick awarded midway into the Eastbourne half was to prove costly as the ball was launched high into the visitors box. Hesitation between defence and keep allowed the United played a free run and flick the ball past Bell in the Eastbourne goal.
The goal gave the home side confidence and were clearly a lot better in possession. But Dynamos had pace to burn a Colegate was working tirelessly down the right and his constant pressure and work rate seemed to eventually filter through to his team mates.
Eastbourne had to reshuffle their pack when Taylor was forced off through injury. Franklin was moved up top to partner Fletcher, Corder-Courtier moved from defence to midfield with Richard Payne tacking his place in the heart of defence.
Dynamos had a succession of corners before one eventually proved fruitful. A corner from the left saw Fletcher jump higher than everyone else and powerfully head past the keeper for his first goal of the game.
The goal ignited a great period for Eastbourne as they grabbed control of the game. Fletcher put daylight between Eastbourne and United when Colegate got in a low cross from the right, Fletcher took a touch before shooting, it took a deflection as it spun into the corner out of the reach of the stranded keeper.
Corder-Courtier tried to take advantage of his more attacking role when he picked up the ball just outside the area, but his shot was just off target when under pressure.
Fletcher quickly secured his hat trick, his second of the season, when another corner from the left was half cleared but nodded back goal wards by Peters, Franklin tried to help it on but was blocked, but as the ball hung in the air, Fletcher beat the keeper to the ball to head into the net.
Eastbourne were soon comfortable when Fletcher added his fourth, and Dynamos fifth. Good work down the right ended with Franklin getting round his defender and cutting back for the Dynamos number nine to shoot past the keeper with the outside of his boot.
The visitors didn't want the half to end, and the second half saw them start slowly as Hollington looked to make amends.
Eastbourne had the first chance of the half when a corner from the right saw Fletcher take a swipe at the ball in the area, only for the ball to be cleared off the line.
Dynamos were still creating the better chances, but possession was shared between the two teams and neither seemed to be able to find that final ball.
Hollington reduced the deficit when they cleared a Dynamos corner and broke away down the right where they had space. It was two against two and Bell came out to close the gap but the winger squared the ball, Payne was unable to clear the ball facing his own goal and the ball found its way through to their striker and found the empty net with a calm finish.
Down the other end Dean Pugh nearly restored Eastbourne's four goal advantage when his free kick from the right cannoned off the bar with the keeper beaten.
Dayle Courtier had taken over the captain's armband and within minutes had a goal to his name as well. He capitalised on confusion in the box and his shot took a slight deflection, which helped it loop over the defence and into the top left corner for his first goal of the season.
As the game coasted along, United had a couple of long range efforts as they continued to attack down the wings and play some nice passing football, Dynamos always looked to attack with pace and maybe either took that extra touch that wasn't needed, or rushed when the final ball was needed.
Franklin went close when the referee played advantage after Fletcher was fouled. He raced away but saw his shot go over the bar.
The final score showed Dynamos had secured another league win as we enter the final few games of the season. The win moves Eastbourne top after Galaxy were held 2-2 against Beulah Baptists on the opposite pitch. Dynamos must now again recover in time for another Monday fixture away to Magham Down.
