Eastbourne Dynamos increased their lead at the top of the league with a hard fought win over Magham Down with another evening fixture.
Martin Bell went down with a virus earlier in the day, so Christian Corder-Courtier took over the gloves in goal. Richard Payne took his place in the centre of defence, while the rest of the team remained the same as Saturday's starting line-up.
Dynamos choose to kick up field and into the wind first half, which was probably a wise choice. Magham started brighter as Dynamos struggled to get out their own half.
The home side had a few good bits of play, but the Eastbourne defence stood strong and Corder-Courtier was rarely troubled in goal.
Eastbourne were having to play on the break, but they failed to keep hold of the ball as Magham won everything in the air as Dynamos tried to clear and the ball just kept coming back.
Eastbourne chances were rare in the first half, but the few they did have probably shaded the ones Magham produced. Fletcher had two good opportunities to give Dynamos the lead as he was twice found by good long passes from the left. Fletcher's chance saw him race through but the Magham player get back for a vital tackle that left Fletcher on the floor. His second effort from a tight angle beat the keeper but went past the far post.
As the half began to edge towards half time, both teams were struggling to keep hold of the ball on an awful surface that had suffered after the winter weather. Dean Pugh came close to breaking the deadlock, a cross came in from the right and Fletcher was in amongst a crowd of defenders tried to win the header. The ball fell to Michael Franklin, but had his back to goal and unable to turn, he laid the ball back to Pugh who fired from inside the area, the ball cleared the crowd of players, only for the keeper to make a brilliant save and tip the ball over the bar for a corner.
Lewis Colegate was next claiming for a penalty when he was just about to shoot, only for the defender to come and barge him off the ball. The referee waved away the Eastbourne protests.
The second half saw Dynamos enjoy a lot more possession, as Magham now stuggled with the wind. Eastbourne pressed looking for the opening goal, but were either denied by good goalkeeping, or poor finishing.
Neil Taylor went close when a cross from Damien Mills took a slight touch before getting to Taylor, enough to put him off as his volley went just wide. Fletcher also went close with a couple of headers as Dynamos gradually upped the tempo. Colegate was looking to get behind his defender on the right but Eastbourne seemed to lack that final ball as it either bounced up on the uneven surface and players rushed into long balls.
Fletcher then was left cursing his luck when the keeper again denied him of a goal. The big number nine latched onto a good through ball and tried lifting it over the keeper who was slightly off his line. The ball looked like it was past the keeper and dipping in, but some how he managed to claw it away for a corner.
Then came the breakthrough, Dynamos had a couple of corners in which they looked dangerous, then they were awarded a free kick just right of the area. Magham managed to clear the first ball but only as far as Peters who when trying to get round his man, was hacked down and Dynamos were able to keep Magham penned in. Taylor this time aiming for the back post saw the keeper get finger tips to the ball, but not enough as dipped under the bar and into the net.
Eastbourne continued to look for a second goal that would kill this game off, as the home side always looked like they were capable of getting a goal. Franklin went close, but after getting past the defender, dragged his shot just wide.
A goalmouth scramble saw Fletcher and Franklin go very close to increasing the lead, but some last ditch challenges saw Magham half clear their lines, Dayle Corder picked up the loose ball on the edge of the area but saw his shot go over the bar and release the pressure on the Magham defence.
The home side had a couple of chances to grab a point as time ticked away. A cross from the left was well defended, while a back-pass from Peters was a bit too close for the Eastbourne nerves. Glenn Taylor cleared when the ball was free in the six yard box following a corner, and Eastbourne had to defend a free kick in a dangerous position before the ref finally blew his whistle.
Dynamos have completed the most gruelling part of their fixture list. 5 games in 10 days was more than most professional clubs, but Eastbourne can be happy with 5 wins, maximum points which puts them top of the table with games counting down and a Semi Final to look forward to. A big thank you must go out to all the players who missed work and left early to make the evening fixtures, plus those that played through injuries and niggles to make sure we had a strong squad for every game. Another big thank you to all the Club Officials and supporters who came along to cheer us on and get us through this tough two weeks, only 3 more weeks to go!
