Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as their dream of reaching the Eastbourne Junior Cup final disappeared.

Dynamos made only one change from the weekend, where Alex Speirs, who was due to start on the bench, had to start because Michael Franklin was stuck in London.

It was the hosts who got the dream start. Their early attack saw their midfielder get to the high ball in the area, his header looked to be going in over Martin Bell, but he somehow managed to tip the ball over the bar.

The hosts scored from the resulting corner when their towering defender headed in unchallenged at the back post.

Eastbourne where now chasing the game, and could have been right back in it when Stephen Fletcher found Neil Taylor, whose shot was brilliantly tipped over by the keeper. Somehow the referee missed the keepers save and awarded a goal kick, this set the tone for the Ref's performance all game.

Dynamos pushed trying to level things up, but Knight also looked like they could score at any minute as they had bags of pace going forward and seemed to find it easy to get behind the Eastbourne defence. A couple of good saves from Bell and desperate defending from Eastbourne kept Knight out for now.

Fletcher than had a great chance to score, a cut back from the left bobbled along on the rock hard surface and Fletcher's shot sailed over the bar from just outside the six-yard box.

The home side increased their lead when their midfielder picked out one of the strikers who raced though to slot the ball through Bell's legs. Dynamos were incensed that the referee failed to spot the handball in the build up to the goal.

The referee then failed to spot another handball, this time in the area as the defender tried to control the ball before clearing his lines.

Eastbourne though could not blame the referee for the fact they current found themselves behind. A lack of urgency on the ball, failing to track the runners and taking too long when in possession saw Dynamos cause themselves more trouble. Too many times an Eastbourne pass didn't find its intended recipient.

Bad luck also seemed to be deserting Eastbourne today as White Knight scored a third before half time. They attacked down the right, a cross into the box as the player got to the byline didn't look dangerous as White Knight hadn't filled the box. Damien Mills wasn't sure what was behind him and attempted to steer the ball out for a corner, but instead helped it past his own keeper.

Stephen Fletcher almost reduced the deficit, his header from a corner beat the keeper, but the ball dipped the wrong side of the bar when it looked like he had scored.

The second half started and Eastbourne already looked beaten, they needed a goal to boost their confidence, and provide that ray of hope that they could still get back into this game. Eastbourne lost the ball straight from the kick off and were nearly further behind.

Eastbourne's efforts in the second half were reduced now to shot's from distance. Knight happy to defend and catch Dynamos on the counter with no need to chase the game.

Mills went some way to making amends when their attacker shot low to Bell's left, the keeper had got a hand to the ball but it rolled towards the goal, Mills did well to clear the ball off the line just in time.

Eastbourne didn't create any chances in the second half, with the keeper not really tested. Taylor went close with a free kick, but the keeper looked comfortable.

Knight increased their lead further when they worked the ball well down the right before shooting from the tightest of angles, the ball squeezed under Bell and trickled over the line.

Eastbourne heads were dropping now, with the game now already over, it was just a case of trying to keep it respectable. The Dynamos players were constantly on the refs case as he continued to give nothing to Eastbourne with some very questionable decisions.

Another one resulted in the awarding of a free kick just outside the area, Eastbourne had surrounded the Knight player and hassled him off the ball with both sets of players scrapping for the loose ball yet somehow the referee awarded the home side a free kick.

The Knight captain stepped up and rubbed salt in the wounds by curling a beautiful free kick round the wall and into the top right hand corner.

As time ticked away, Fletcher had Dynamos best chance of the first half when he headed Darren Vine's cross straight at the keeper.

The game ended in unusual circumstances when play had to be stopped because Eastbourne keeper Martin Bell collapsed with no one around him while Eastbourne were attacking down the other end. With the game in its final few minutes the referee agreed to call time on a game that had been over for some time now. It was atleast 10 minutes before Bell was heading back to the changing rooms, and even then didn't look well.

Eastbourne will be disappointed in another Semi Final defeat in which they conceded an early goal and basically didn't play well enough. They will be upset in the way they conceded all of the goals and unhappy that they failed to score for only the second time this season. Maybe the manic fixture schedule of the last 3 weeks have finally caught up on everyone.

Dynamos will have to pick themselves up, dust themselves down and get ready for another big game, which can win them the league, the priority at the beginning of the season. Nelson Tigers have been resurgent in the last few weeks, beating Magham Down and Hawkhurst as they fight to avoid relegation.
