Although technically Dynamos secured the Division 3 title last week when Nelson Tigers were suspended from playing fixtures because of outstanding fines to the Sussex County FA, Eastbourne wanted to make sure with a win.
Before this season, Eastbourne had not won a game at Bexhill Road, but having already sorted that out a few weeks ago, the Champions continued their unbeaten run with a fine 4-1 victory over Beulah Baptists.
The victory was made all the more sweeter with Dynamos missing several key players. Stephen Fletcher, Shaun Peters, Richard Payne and Michael Franklin were all missing from the side. Dave Moran stepped in to fill the right wing role, while Dayle Courtier moved to partner Christian Corder-Courtier at the back, with Ben Curwood lining up at left back. Damien Mills was given the chance to play in his more favoured central midfield role while Lewis Colegate partnered Neil Taylor in attack.
The Champions started reasonably well considering the amount of changes, and were having the first early attempts on goal, but failed to test the keeper.
Eastbourne defence looked strong, and allowed the visitors to play high up the field, but Dynamos only managed to create a few half chances. Darren Vine went close with a volley from just outside the area after the home side tried to clear, but his volley went inches wide of the post.
On 17 minutes, Dynamos took the lead. Dean Pugh sneaked in to steal the ball when two defenders hesitated on the ball. The ball seemed to be rolling out for a goal kick but Pugh managed to keep it in play and cut it back for Colegate who fired past the defender on the line.
The home side were finding more space behind the Eastbourne defence as they upped their game. Eastbourne were now not picking up the second ball and sometimes played themselves into trouble. Martin Bell managed to thwart a Beulah attack when he dived at the feet of the midfield, but he couldn't gather the ball, Beulah managed to retrieve the ball but the cross was headed clear by the Eastbourne defence.
Mills went close to extending Eastbourne's lead when he ran through, but his half volley was tipped onto the post by the keeper before going out for a Dynamos corner.
The visitors did double their lead on 33 minutes, Alex Speirs crossed from the left after good work between him and Curwood. The keeper could only punch the ball clear, but it was a poor clearance that landed at Pugh's feet who controlled before shooting through a crowd of players and into the net, getting a slight deflection on the way through.
The home side continued to press for a goal that would get them back into the game, they forced a series of corners which Eastbourne managed to clear well enough. They also went close with a few chances that went just wide of the post, while Bell had to deal with an awkward bounce right on line.
Lewis Colegate then had a glorious chance to put Dynamos further ahead when he chased Taylor's pass. Colegate beat the keeper to the ball and had time to steady himself but his effort was blocked on the line by the defender who managed to get back in time.
Moran also went close when his shot from the right hit the side netting, with Taylor and Pugh waiting at the back post.
The second half saw Dynamos look for the third, knowing that letting their hosts score the next goal would let them right back into the game.
Dynamos had a few half attempts, with Taylor having a shot saved and Speirs seeing an effort go wide.
10 minutes into the second half and Dynamos scored their third goal. The keeper's poor clearance went straight to Pugh who controlled before volleying from about 30 yards over the keeper and into the net for his second goal of the game.
Eastbourne continued to look for further goals to increase their lead, but were wasteful with their chances. Beulah were also looking to get on the score sheet but Bell was never tested.
Pugh had a great chance when he got round the defender who dived in recklessly, he had numerous options as he closed in on goal which would have been better suited to have a decent effort, but the winger went for glory instead and blazed over the bar.
With about 20 minutes to go, Baptists were awarded a penalty when their winger tried to jink round the Dayle Courtier who was then adjudged to have fouled the player who went down rather too easily in some of the Eastbourne players eyes.
The winger picked himself up was left holding the ball as none of his team mates seemed to want to take the spot kick themselves. He sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-1.
Minutes later and Eastbourne were themselves appealing for a penalty as Colegate when to go round the keeper, the keeper managed to get something on the ball, but with neither player knowing where the ball was, the keeper wrapped both arms round Colegate's legs and hauled him down, Dynamos appeals were waved away and as Beulah tried to clear, Taylor won the ball and was then fouled on the edge of the area. Dynamos continued their protests for a penalty to the referee who claimed his didn't see it.
As the home side pressed for further goals, Eastbourne were left to attack on the break. The game was becoming scrappy now and tempers were flaring. Eastbourne didn't need to get involved, they just needed to keep their heads and defend well. Taylor then received the ball inside his own half and sent a long ball for Colegate to chase. The striker got to the ball first, avoiding the offside and slotted past the keeper for Eastbourne's fourth goal and the victory.
The win continues Eastbourne's good league form this season, and the team played well considering all the changes that were made. The side go into their last game of the season on Tuesday against second placed Galaxy before a well deserved break.
