Match Report

Eastbourne Dynamos missed out on the chance to finish a memorable season unbeaten in the league when second place Galaxy beat.

The yellows were the only side so far this season to have taken any points of Eastbourne with the 2-2 on the first day of the season, since then Dynamos had swept everyone aside on their way to clinching the Division 3 title.

A few changes for the side the won at the weekend with normal keeper Martin Bell missing only his second game of the season. Christian Corder-Courtier took the number 1 jersey, with Jason Robinson coming into take Corder-Courtiers place in defence. Shaun Peters returned from to partner him in defence after missing out at the weekend.

Ben Curwood kept his place at left back while Damien Mills dropped back to right back with Darren Vine missing. Lewis Colegate returned to his right wing role after his cameo up front, with Dean Pugh on the other side. Dayle Courtier and Alex Speirs paired up in midfield with Stephen Fletcher returning to head the attack with Neil Taylor. Michael Franklin, Richard Payne and Kane Loughton took up the places on the bench, all of which were unavailable at the weekend.

It was Dynamos who had the first attack as they looked to gain an early advantage, a cross from the right wasn't dealt with by the Galaxy defence and Pugh's snap shot flew inches over the bar.

The home side continued to press forward but couldn't test the keeper and the game soon became a stop-start affair with the referee constantly stopping play for every little thing.

Galaxy looked to expose Dynamos when pushed further up the field, and the visitors where soon using the long throw they possessed to their advantage as the home side struggled to defend their lines.

Tension between the too sides was evident throughout the game, but both sides where not helped by some questionable decisions from the man in the middle.

Galaxy took the lead 15 minutes into the game, a long throw was flicked on by the yellow head which took it past the defenders and past Corder-Courtier.

Dynamos were carving out their own chances so there was no need to panic yet. Pugh went close again with a chipped effort, while Fletcher didn't get hold of his shot when set up by Taylor in the box. Taylor also had an effort but got under his shot and saw it go over.

The home side failed to create anything from any corners as Galaxy were dominant with anything in the air. Galaxy almost increased their lead when they attacked and got round the Eastbourne defence, raced into the area, but a brilliant save by Corder-Courtier prevented the visitors extending their lead.

Alex Speirs then saw his shot blocked after some rare passing football from the home side, only for the ref to then award a goal kick.

Fletcher was than fouled after a high foot saw him receive stud marks to his thigh. From the resulting free kick, Pugh's effort cannoned of the bar only for Galaxy to get to the ball first as it bounced in the box and rake it away to safety.

Galaxy were then awarded a ridiculous penalty. Their striker attempted to take on Peters, who got his body in the way to sheppard the ball out of play, Robinson joined him to help out and as everyone tried to outmuscle each other, the Galaxy player fell to the floor, the referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot to spark protests from the Dynamos players.

Justice was done when Corder-Courtier dived to his left to parry away the resulting spot kick before Dynamos cleared their lines.

The first half was pretty evenly matched as the sides went into half time, but Galaxy were threatening every time with the long throw that Dynamos just didn't deal with well enough.

Changes at the break saw Corder-Courtier hand over the gloves to Loughton who was making his long awaited debut, as Dayle Courtier made way.

Galaxy started the second half better and were looking to increase their lead. A few long throws again caused trouble in the Eastbourne box before Loughton claimed both hands on the ball.

Dynamos found themselves two goals down when another long throw was again flicked on past the keeper, similar to the first.

Dynamos tried to rally but Galaxy were now in control of the game and were the ones who looked like scoring again. Dynamos found themselves going for the long ball every time in a desperate attempt to get back into the game, but in doing so played into Galaxys hands as they easily dealt with every high ball thrown at them.

The visitors were finding it all too easy now to cut open the Eastbourne defence, and Loughton was forced into a couple of saves.

Speirs had one of Dynamos only real attempts at goal, but his rushed shot from the edge of the area sailed over the bar. Dynamos failed to do anything with a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions, the same can be said for the couple of corners they had as Galaxy dealt with them.

Fletcher had a claim for a penalty turned away when he was clearly being man handled by the defender as he tried to find space in the area.

Eastbourne were losing the ball through basic errors, and mostly in their own half which put themselves under more pressure. Dynamos conceded a third when a short goal kick saw the defence put under pressure and hassled out of possession, the Galaxy player managed to slot past the keeper for a cool finish.

Dynamos gained a consolation goal when a free kick from just inside the Galaxy half was missed by everyone, but Fletcher stole in round the back and his stooping header looped over the outstretched reach of the keeper and into the net.

Eastbourne still lacked any real urgency, with too many players now thinking the game was over. There seemed to be no fight or desire to salvage the game.

Galaxy restored their three goal lead and secured the points with a fourth, Galaxy broke down the right and their midfield stormed past his marker before chipping the Eastbourne keeper who was left exposed by his defence.

Galaxy had a couple of chances to further increase their lead but couldn't take them.

The whistle went on a disappointing way to end the season. Dynamos would have taken the current league table at the beginning of the season, but just feels disappointing to get so close to a full league season unbeaten. If the Champions had managed to take one of their chances in the first half and been level at half time, the second half performance would have been much improved.

The performance will have disappointed the players more than the result, in maybe the one game in which they seemed to be lacking some steel and fight to they play.

Everything now turns to the end of season awards, to celebrate winning the league, and reaching the County Cup Semi Finals and Eastbourne Cup Semi Final. A big thanks to all the players this season who have made a great team spirit and been rewarded with a trophy, manager Gary Taylor who guided Dynamos all season, and the supporters who turned up wind, rain and shine (sometimes) to cheer the team on. See you in Division 2!
