Eastbourne Dynamos came away from Icklesham with a share of the spoils in a very entertaining and well-contested game.
Dynamos manager Gary Taylor was forced into two changes from last weeks team with both his centre backs missing, but Christian Corder-Courtier returned to captain the side, with Glenn Taylor coming in to partner him at the back.
It was the home side that got off to the better start, passing it round well and working Eastbourne for the ball. But the home side didn't really test Eastbourne keeper Martin Bell.
The visitors started to get a foot hold in the game and enjoy a bit more possession, they were pressing high up the pitch and putting the Icklesham defence under pressure.
The game swung from end to end as both sides looked to get the first goal. Icklesham had a chance when their winger managed to create some space inside the area, but his shot was straight at Bell. The Dynamos defence were holding strong but sometimes looked outnumbered.
Alex Speirs had a speculative effort from outside the area, but didn't make clean enough contact with the ball and it went wide. Dean Pugh had a great opportunity when Sean Corson managed to play him in, but he scuffed his shot and saw it go just wide of the post.
Casuals were the ones to take the lead when they managed to break down the right. They managed to pick out their midfielder in the middle of the area, Bell came out and tried to smother the ball but it somehow the player managed to squeeze it round the keeper and managed to balance himself before slotting into and empty net.
Neil Taylor then tried his luck for Dynamos as they attempted to get back on level terms, but that also went wide. Corson then danced his way past a couple of tackles before going for goal, the keeper parried wide.
From the resulting corner, Lewis Colegate's corner looked like it was heading straight to the keeper as it landed under the bar, but the keeper parried it into his own net under no real pressure to draw the teams level.
Ickelsham managed to take the lead again before half time when the Dynamos defence one the initial header, only for the loose ball to be picked up by an Icklesham player, he feed the ball to their striker whose shot from an angle found its way to the far corner.
The second half was more of the same, with Dynamos enjoying slightly more possession, but both teams looking dangerous going forward.
Icklesham were the ones carving out the more clear cut chances, and Bell was forced into some fine saves to keep his side in the game. One such save saw his side rewarded with a goal kick, when it should have clearly been a corner. Speirs had Dynamos first real attempt on goal this half, but again this wasn't on target, which seems to be Dynamos story so far this season.
Lewis Colegate raced through but saw his shot saved. Down the other end Icklesham played in their winger as the Linesman's flag was raised, but the referee never blew his whistle. Half the Eastbourne defence stopped to protest while the Icklesham player carried on. Damien Mills stuck to him and as the player attempted to go round him, Mills made a last ditch challenge to prevent him from shotting. Icklesham shouts for a penalty where waved away as Dynamos cleared their lines.
Midway through the half, the visitors drew level. Corson was fouled on the edge of the area as he attempted to go round the defender. Pugh looked as if he was going to have a shot, but instead played it down the line to Colegate who was unmarked, he managed to cut it back to Taylor who fired low into the corner to finish off a well worked set piece.
Both sides carved out half chances, bell was again forced to make another good save. Corson again tricked his way past a defender, but couldn't but dragged his shot wide.
As the game edged towards it final minutes, both teams were looking for the goal that would claim all three points, George Lavender raced through from the right, playing on after Colegate was brought down. Lavenders shot saw the keeper get a hand to it, and possibly enough to stop it going into the far corner as it went out for a corner.
Icklesham had the last attempt, but as the ball came in, Eastbourne managed to clear their lines.
Eastbourne will be pleased to have got their first point of the season, and their first goals. A good performance where everyone battled well for the whole 90 minutes. Some good saves by Bell and some good defending helped give Dynamos a platform to build on. Some good football in places on yet another fine playing surface. Some question marks over some players shooting, where maybe a bit more practice needs to be taken at training.
