Eastbourne Dynamos faced another team fighting their way from the foot of the table for the second week running as Hastings Rangers visited Old Town Rec this week.
Manager Dave Moran made a few changes from last week's encouraging second half performance, despite the loss. Ben Curwood returned to the team at centre back, Sean Corson pushed forward into midfield, with Neil Taylor returning to his striking role. Mark Likeman was the unfortunate one to miss out, being moved to the bench, with Nick Webb returning to also start on the bench with Grant Lavender.
The opening exchanges saw Hastings in the more confident mode and tested Dynamos after attacking down the left before a good cross in was headed over by the attacker. Dynamos high line meant the visited were forced into a straight foot race with defenders, but Bell was only forced into a couple of saves, including one for the cameras.
Dynamos grew into the half but were guilty of giving the ball away. Hastings failed to take their chances when they held the upper hand, but as the second half wore on, it was the home side that looked like scoring. Neil Taylor looked to be through on goal, but was adjudged to be offside.
The home side then had to make an early change with manager Dave Moran coming off for Lavender, but if anyone thought this might disrupt the team, they were mistaken.
A quick counted attacked and neat passing move ended with Alex Speirs sliding a perfect ball through to Dean Pugh, who skewed his shot wide under pressure from the defender.
Another quick attack saw Lewis Colegate break away down the left, but with defenders getting back, he chose to pick out Speirs just inside the area but he didn't really connect with the ball and the keeper saved comfortably enough.
The second half saw Dynamos continue to improve, and they soon had the ball in the back of the net. A quick throw saw Colegate pick out Joe Lavender on the right, he cut inside before crossing for Taylor to head past the keeper at the back post. The linesman then flagged for offside, even though Taylor was standing next to the defender. The referee consulted before awarding a free kick to the visitors.
Eastbourne then managed to finally get their noses in front when Taylor was picked out in the left of the box, got to the byline but had nobody in the box to aim for, he still went for goal but needed the help of the defender to see it over the line as he missed his clearance, only to see the ball hit his standing leg which diverted it into the net. About time Dynamos had some luck this season.
Hastings then started to press for an equaliser while Dynamos reverted to hitting them on the break as they pushed more men forward. As the game wore on and the minutes ticked away, more and more pressure started to build on the Eastbourne defence, but they handled it brilliantly with Curwood, Lavender, Damien Mills and Conor Clyne in particular playing well. Corson then slipped into defence as the injured Lavender was replaced by Webb.
Bell was assured in goal as ever, but one moment made sure that Dynamos held onto their slender lead when a crisp shot from outside the area managed to make its way through a crowd of bodies, Bell diving to his right to save, but two Rangers players closed in to tuck away the loose ball, Bell dived bravely at their feet to punch the ball away to safety, much to the relief of his team mates.
As the minutes ticked away, Dynamos were gifted another slice of luck and secured the points they needed. Eastbourne had attacked down the right but had lost the ball. The defender passed the ball back to his keeper who had time to clear his lines. He was unfortunate to lose his footing just as he went to kick the ball and stumble to the ground. Taylor was on hand to capitalise on the mistake and get there first and poke the ball into the net.
The final whistle was meet with cheers, possibly of relief, as Dynamos recent bad from came to an end. The last two performances and been much better, and the side looks a lot more settled now.
Dynamos have another chance to improve their position, when Battle Baptists visit old Town for a repeat of last weeks close game.
