Langney were the visitors to old town wreck for the game on Saturday.
The teams last met when Langney were sitting pretty on top of the Division 2 table and Dynamos were struggling to even do the simple things well in games. That day Dynamos fell to an embarrassing 5-1 loss. Since then the run of form for Langney has hit the wall having not picked up a point in the league since and Dynamos had strung together back to back victories, and with a win would go to within two points of their opponents.
As usual there were a couple of changes in the Dynamos team. Grant Lavender (older brother of Joe) coming in for his first start of the season at left back with the ever versatile Ben Curwood moving from left back to centre back. Nick Webb came in on the left for Dean Pugh who with a few niggling injuries was on the bench.
The game kicked off with a fierce wind blowing across the pitch. Both teams seemed to struggle with it early on but as the game moved on both teams played most of their football on the floor and at points some excellent passing from each side was easy on the eye.
Possession changed hands a lot early on with neither team really taking the upper hand. It was the away team that struck first though when a corner was swung in and seemingly dealt with by the Dynamos defence before the ball was put back into the mix and a Langney midfielder was left completely unguarded to tap in from 2 yards out at the back post. Dynamos keeper Martin Bell was understandably less than happy with the lapse in concentration.
The home side struggled to get into the match after the goal and Langney were controlling things nicely through the centre of the field, with their superior physical presence and lack of sharpness from the Dynamos midfield allowing an easy opening 30 minutes for the away team. The Dynamos front two of Neil Taylor and Lewis Colegate were having to feed off scraps and were becoming more and more isolated up the pitch.
Langney then took a big step towards securing three points when a ball over the top found their pacy striker who held off the attentions of Conor Clyne to fire under Bell at his near post.
Unlike what had happened in previous weeks Dynamos didn't let their heads drop and Sean Corson sent a superb through ball to Colegate who just couldn't get his feet sorted in time to unleash a shot. Dynamos were back level soon after through Corson. Good work down the right between Damien Mills and Joe Lavender ended with Lavender (who is improving with every game and at 16 looks as confident on the ball as players twice his age) crossing the ball well and the second ball fell kindly for Corson who still had a lot to do from an acute angle in the box but finished confidently into the corner of the net.
The half time team talk was mainly focusing on the fact the home team weren't getting to the ball quick enough and Langney had too much time to pick their passes. However Dynamos were still in the game at 2-1 but just needed to find the traits that had earned them points in previous weeks.
Second half started with a barrage of corners from Langney. Bell coming out to punch away well on more than one occasion and although Langney had a massive height advantage Dynamos attacked the ball well in the air and did well not to go further behind.
After the early pressure Dynamos really started to grow into the game. They found their passing and started to mount pressure on their opposition. The next chance fell to Colegate after some good passing down the Left between Webb, Alex Speirs and Taylor, Taylor clipped a ball over the top for Colegte who's lobbed volley had the keeper well beaten but just missed the angle.
The home team probably enjoyed more possession for the first time in the match but Langney always looked dangerous going forward and Bell (who has been outstanding so far this season) was forced into a trademark one on one save pushing the ball round the post from a well struck shot. Also Langney had a call for a penalty when Webb lost the ball on the edge of his own box and dived with a last ditch challenge but the referee adjudged him to have got the ball. It was probably one of those situations where if the tackle had been the other way around you would have wanted a penalty but Webb did seem to get something on the ball.
Goal scorer Corson hobbled off 20 minutes from the end allowing Pugh to enter the fray on the left and Webb to join Speirs in the centre of midfield. The winger nearly had an immediate impact as he was put in down the left and his low drive from the edge of the box was gathered by the keeper at the second attempt.
Dynamos continued to press for the equaliser and had several corners which the away team scrambled away, one fell to J.Lavender who rasping volley was well blocked.
Lavender was again picked out at the back post with a great cross from the left but his spectacular attempt at a scissor kick flew past the post.
Langney held on for the final whistle and took the three points and will be pleased to stop the run of bad form.
There were plenty of positives to come from game for the Dynamos but they can't afford to keep going behind in games before they buck their ideas up.
It has to be said that the game was played in good spirits and some decent football was on display from both sides. All this was helped by a referee that let the game flow, spoke to the players rationally instead of reaching for his pocket at every opportunity and generally made it a good game to be part of.
Dynamos travel to high flying Cinque Ports next week where the bitter taste of an extra time defeat will still be in the mouths of the Eastbourne boys from the last visit there. It's always a though match but one the Dynamos will need and believe they can get something from.
