Ore Athletic visited Old Town Rec this weekend searching to close the gap at the top of the table. If they win their two games in hand then they go top of the table.
Dynamos were forced into a few changes following last week's impressive win. With Stephen Fletcher and Nick Webb missing and Conor Clyne still recovering from his hamstring strain, Ben Curwood returned to partner Sean Corson in defence, with Grant Lavender returning to left back. Joe Lavender partnered Neil Taylor in centre midfield, while Josh McDonald managed to hold onto his right midfield role after his debut last week. Corson was also given the captains armband.
It was the very vocal visitors who enjoyed the greater possession. Clearly a team in confident form, they pressed Dynamos at every opportunity. Eastbourne's attempts to play their way out from defence, at times was their own downfall as they conceded possession too easily.
The work rate was missing from Dynamos game and they seemed beaten before the game really got going, although Ore only managed a handful of efforts on goal, Martin Bell was never really troubled. The home side were guilty of being too slow on the ball and got caught in possession far too many times.
About 20 minutes in, and Atheltic took the lead. Poor marking from Dynamos allowed the Ore striker to get on the end of a cross from the right with space at the back post to fire past Bell.
Athletic had complete control of the game at this point, but failed to convert that possession into goals or chances.
As the half wore on, Dynamos started to gain more of the ball, and managed to make so progress going forward. Lewis Colegate was starting to use his pace and work rate to cause the visiting defence some problems. McDonald was nearly onto a thought ball, but the keeper got there first before him, McDonald and a defender collided leaving the keeper requiring treatment.
Dynamos were nearly in again before the defender blocked and the ball went out for a corner. The resulting corner was swung in and Mark Likeman rose above the defender at the back post to nod the ball back across goal, only to see it come back off the underside of the bar. McDonald was first to react to the loose ball and slide in to poke it past the defender and into the net for his first goal for the club and bring Eastbourne level.
The goal gave the home side confidence and started to play more how they expect to play, but the half time whistle came and prevented any momentum they could build.
The second half saw Ore come out all guns blazing, as Dynamos continued to give the ball away after working hard to win it back. The visitors were now finding it easier to cut through the Dynamos defence but were still unable to score and retake the lead.
Athletic looked like they were going to take lead after a neat interchange of passes saw the striker race through on goal, and when one on one with the keeper, Bell did enough to put him off as the striker skewed his shot wide.
It wasn't long before Ore did have the lead, after some neat work down the right, the Athletic player helped the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the net.
Before Dynamos could muster any sort of response, they round themselves further behind. A quick free kick and a one-two saw Ore cut through the Dynamos defence down the left. Bell was left exposed and could do nothing as he was beaten from close range at his near post.
Ore threatened to push further ahead, but as the half entered the last 15 minutes, they seemed to take their foot off the pedal. Pugh had already raced past the full back in one Dynamos counter attack, but the keeper had cut out his pull back. Pugh then reduced the deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining. Likeman controlled the ball before turning his marked. His neat ball through to Pugh, how had managed to stay onside, allowed him to shot at goal from just inside the area. The ball flew past the flat footed keeper at his near post.
Dynamos raced to restart the game, but the most they could muster was a couple of crosses into the box that were cleared or flagged for offside before the ref blew the whistle for full time.
Ore Athletic probably deserved the three points for the amount of possession and chances they had, but Dynamos battled well after a poor start and can be pleased that they ran title contenders close. One thing they will learn from this is that they need to hold onto the ball better. Giving away possession cheaply will cost them points.
