Despite the recent bad weather, Old Town Rec was passed fit on Saturday morning, allowing Eastbourne Dynamos the chance to play their first game for three weeks. Westfield III's were the visitors for this Challenge Cup encounter. Westfield had the early pressure as Dynamos looked rusty from their recent break. A few silly mistakes caused more unneeded pressure, but the game soon settled and the Dynamos looked more of a threat on the counter attack. Mark Likeman became the first Eastbourne Dynamos player to pick up a yellow card after a nasty tackle on the Westfield midfielder. Likeman could have faced an early bath had he been the last defender. Good work down the right wing ended with Neil Taylor curling the ball round the keeper and into the bottom left hand corner from outside the area to give Eastbourne the breakthrough. Dean Pugh missed a good chance for Dynamos to extend their lead, but his shot hit the side netting with only the goalkeeper to beat. Pugh then missed a second chance when he stabbed wide Taylor's low corner. Dynamos seemed to lack that bit of work rate off the ball and gave away possession far to easily at times, which always meant Westfield were in with a chance. The second half started well for Dynamos who controlled the game well and fashion a reasonable amount off chances but failed to take them. Dynamos began to keep the ball more, which forced Westfield to make all the running. Dynamos did manage to increase their lead when Lloyd Taylor's persistence meant he managed to square the ball for N. Taylor to score his second of the game. Eastbourne then seemed to take their foot off the pedal, which allowed Westfield to push forward. Westfield won numerous corners and always looked dangerous and Dynamos almost managed to survive, but conceded when Westfield's big defender headed the ball against the bar before going in. Westfield pushed for the equaliser and Dynamos defended bravely at times and could have secured the game when Glenn Taylor hit a long range shot that was going in, but it was saved by the keeper. Again Dynamos began to give the ball away when they really needed to keep possession and Westfield looked to score at every opportunity. The final whistle went and Dynamos were through to their second Quarter Finals of the season. |
