The last Cup competition Eastbourne Dynamos were still in was the Eastbourne Junior Cup. League 2 rivals Eastbourne Albert were Dynamos opponents at Old Town Rec, with the two sides fresh from the 2-2 draw in the league the previous week.
Dynamos boosted their team with the return of Sam Fry and Nick Webb to the subs bench, and Mark Unsworth to the starting eleven, making his first appearance since injuring his knee last season. With Mark Likeman missing, Lewis Colegate partnered Neil Taylor upfront, with Sean Corson moving to centre midfield.
The Albert made a number of changes, using their squad to its full advantage. And while the Albert tried to settle, it was the home side who made all the early running. Dynamos were quicker to the ball, and closing down fast. They defended high up the pitch and were able to prevent most of the balls over the top.
Speirs and Corson worked well in the middle of the park as Albert gave the ball away. The home side were quick to attack, but after a few corners, it was on a quick attack the Dynamos took a deserved lead. Damien Mills put Lewis Colegate through, his cross was collected by Taylor at the back post, whose shot went over the defender and past the keeper.
Dynamos pushed forward looking to increase their lead, but were caught when Albert managed to get behind the Eastbourne defence. The Albert striker set himself before shooting, the ball took a wicked deflection off Mills who threw himself in the way to block, the ball looped up and over the backtracking Martin Bell and into the net.
The home side went and tried to restore their lead, Colegate sliced wide when in a good position, while Pugh hit the post before being crowded out.
The Albert then managed to turn the game around. Dynamos lost the ball just inside their own half and their pacey winger raced forward, Bell managed to get something on his angled shot to force it off target, but an Albert player was there at the back post to fire past a Dynamos defender on the line.
The Albert were now enjoying a lot more possession and the goals had clearly given them a lot more confidence. Dynamos only managed to muster one last shot, with Joe Lavender firing high over the bar from the right.
The second half saw the Albert continue from where they had left off, and it wasn't long before they had increased their lead. Their striker managed to find himself with the ball to the side of the goal and fire past Bell with a well taken finish.
Before Dynamos could force any sort of response, the lead the visitors held increased. The same striker's first touch took him past the last Dynamos defender and he fired emphatically past Bell who was given no chance.
The goals kept coming, for the away side as they increased their lead to 6-1 with another two goals, despite having one chalked off for offside.
Dynamos managed claw one back with about 10 minutes to go, but after the keeper dropped a corner and Mills fired in the loose ball.
But it was the visitors who finished the scoring, after being awarded a dubious free kick which basically saw both players wrestle each other to the ground, the Albert took a quick free kick, and fired the ball past Bell, at the second attempt after seeing the first come back off the post, while the entire Dynamos team stood and watched, before complaining to the ref about the initial awarding of the free kick, and then the position of where it was taken from. The referee ignored these, probably because the game was already over by then.
It's astonishing how Dynamos came play so well in the first half, and then so bad in the second. Credit must go to the Albert, who once settled, controlled the game, and were clinical in the second half with their chances.
Dynamos now only have the league to concentrate on, and will now have to face the fact that they'll have finished all their games by March.
