The last home game of the season for Eastbourne Dynamos saw them face up to St Helens, the first of two encounters over the next couple of weeks.
A few changes for manager Dave Moran, with Damien Mills recovering from his injury to take his place at right back, allowing Ben Curwood to switch to the left, with Sean Corson dropping from midfield to partner captain for the week, Mark Unsworth in defence with Martin Bell in goal.
Lewis Colegate this week found himself out on the right, with Joe Lavender and Alex Speirs starting the game in midfield, with Dean Pugh out on his usual left midfield position. Neil Taylor and Mark Likeman made up the front two
A scrappy opening period saw possession exchange hands frequently, but Dynamos were appealing for a penalty within the first 5 minutes, when Colegates cross from the right eluded the defence and the keeper, Pugh was at the back post waiting to knock in the ball but was sent flying after the defender clattered him in the back, before clearing the loose ball. Dynamos were incensed that they had not been awarded what they felt was a blatant penalty.
A few minutes later and the home side were in front. Taylor took a short corner to Curwood whose cross into the box took a deflection off the defender who had his arms raised. The referee pointed to the spot and Taylor tucked away the resulting penalty despite the keeper getting a hand to it.
The Saints then saw an effort go wide before having their own penalty appeal turned away. Both teams created a few chances but it was Eastbourne who shaded the possession and chances in the first half.
Unsworth saw a header from a corner go just wide, while Pugh saw a volley go wide after Colegate cross from the right was deflected.
Likeman then took a pass from Mills, first touch took him past the defender before he blazed his shot over the bar from inside the area.
The second half saw Dynamos give away chances far too easily, and St Helens enjoyed the most possession. The home side were forced the attack on the break. Taylor was flagged offside just as he was about the pull the target, while a close offside call at the other stopped the visiting striker from racing through on goal.
St Helens had another appeal for a penalty when the striker raced into the penalty area, but he went down a little too long after Unsworth's challenge and the referee waved him to his feet.
Likeman then saw a header go wide after he met Colegates cross at the back post, while at the other end the St Helens defender could only stab the ball wide when it looked easier to score after collecting a pass which found its way through a crowded area.
As the game entered its final few minutes, both teams had chances. Likeman found himself through on goal after collecting a neat pass from McDonald, but Likeman sliced high and wide with only the keeper to beat. With only a few minutes remaining, St Helens managed to draw level.
The midfield collected possession in the middle of the Eastbourne half and took an audacious attempt on goal, the ball bounced awkwardly in front of Bell who couldn't keep it out and the ball crept inside the post, much to the jubilation of the visiting players.
One of the last's acts of the game was for the large St Helen's centre back to steam through the back of Colegate while he collected a pass. There was a nasty crack and Colegate fell to the floor clutching his leg. Lucky the crack only came from his shinpads, but that was the last action Colegate was going to see and now faces a race to be fit for the next game.
St Helen's probably deserved something out of the game after their second half performance, but Dynamos will be disappointed to have not seen out the game or taken their numerous chances that they had on goal to increase their lead.
The countdown of games continues and Dynamos now face Crowhurst next week with only four games remaining.
