Eastbourne Dynamos had a chance to close the gap at the bottom of the table with the visit of Wittersham to Old Town Rec who were 2 places above Dynamos in the league. Dynamos manager Gary Taylor had a few selection problems with so many people unavailable and just managed to field a patched up team of 11 players with no subs available. Chris Milnes replaced Martin Bell in goal, with starts for Simon Burke and David Moran from the team that beat Burwash last week. Wittersham started the game more confident than Eastbourne as they passed the ball round much better and kept the ball well. Dynamos took a while to get into the game and only really threatened on the break. It was Eastbourne who had the ball in the back of the net first though as Lloyd Taylor beat the offside trap before squaring the ball the Dean Pugh to head into and empty net. But the goal was ruled out for offside by the referee who seemed to be the only one to have spotted it and Eastbourne were adamant that the goal should have stood. The game got worse for Eastbourne as Wittersham took the lead after Eastbourne had given away possession in the Wittersham half and they cut through Eastbourne's defence who had look comfortable up until then before the Greens striker chipped the ball over Chris Milnes in the Eastbourne goal and into the net. Eastbourne could have squared the game on a couple of occasions, Stephen Fletcher went close with a shot that went wide of the goal, and Dean Pugh had another header go just over the bar. Wittersham took advantage of a static Eastbourne team after it looked as though Mark Likeman had handled the ball. But the referee didn't award anything and Wittersham caught Dynamos sleeping and Chris Milnes lost the one on one. Eastbourne got back in the game soon after the break in a half in which they dominated for long periods. Stephen Fletcher who was first to the ball picked up Dayle Courtier's defence spitting pass. His shot went under the oncoming keeper and into the net. The half seemed to drag on longer than needed as it was constantly being stopped for injuries and silly fouls. Wittersham continued to argue with the referee and were rewarded with four yellow cards, one of which turned into a red later on in the game. Dynamos completed the comeback when Mark Likeman's diagonal ball was picked up by Dean Pugh who knocked the ball over the keeper and into the net just inside the post. But for a moment it looked like this goal was also going to be disallowed as the ball slipped through a hole in the net and the referee checked with the linesman to make sure it had gone in. Both teams had chances to win the game in the final few minutes. Eastbourne had the most but Wittersham defended bravely and a few good saves from the keeper prevented Dynamos taking the lead. Eastbourne hearts where in mouths as a Wittersham cross from the left looked to be going over, but it dipped and Chris Milnes pushed the ball against the bar before Dynamos cleared their lines amid claims the ball had gone over the line. Eastbourne Dynamos had secured a point, which lifted them off the bottom of the table for the first time since 23rd September. But Dynamos will be disappointed that they wasted so many chances in a game they could have won. |
